Notes:

This Release is primarily a bug-fix/maintenance update.
Most of the issues addressed are discussed and described in the Flyspray Bug Tracker.

This is one new feature, however. The integrated GRIB PlugIn now supports GRIB V2 format files. This update enables some new sources for worldwide GRIB data from a variety of sources. Please exercise all of the GRIB features heavily.

Our main intent for this Beta series is to:
a) Validate the bug fixes described above.
b) Validate the new GRIB v2 functionality.
c) Watch carefully for unexpected regressions against OCPN V4.2.0

We plan to make one or two Beta test cycles, as necessary, and release this update as OpenCPN V4.2.2000 in about two weeks time.

Please check and clear your Flyspray tasks as appropriate.

Thanks
Dave

Re grib2
The 'historical' NOAA gribs in .grb2 format, such as found in e.g.
Index of /data/gfsanl/201604/20160424
cannot be read

They show fine in Qtvlm

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.2.1706 Release

The very fine mesh grib2 (0.01°) grib2 from Meteo-France display fine !

Rather large coverage, but limited to 36 h. Good for racing...
(downloaded for each 1h time slot, as they are HUGE: 18 Mo)

I copied ucar unpackgrib2.c in late July 2015 and in August 2015 they released a new version, the first in more than one year...

I can make a patch but there's a lot of other stuff not working with these 0 360° grids (v1 or v2).

Moreover there's no API for telling plugins they should free memory and with big grib files it can make OCPN very slow even after closing the grib dialog.

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.2.1706 Release

This beta is also able to display a 40 Mo 0.25° grib2 from Meteo-France (same source as above, same coverage): 6 different times, Wind, Wind gust, SLP, Cloud cover, Air temp.

PS So maybe size is not the only issue with the historical NOAA gribs

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.2.1706 Release

I have been running OpenCPN 4.2.0 on Windows 8.1, Ubuntu 14.04 32 bit, and Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit. When I tried to download and install the 4.2.1706 Beta Windows advised me I had a newer version already installed.

When I tried "sudo apt-get install opencpn" on the Linux boxes I was advised everything was already up to date.

Why?

Windows:
Certainly a bug

Linux:
You probably don't have the beta PPA configured on your system.

Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nohal/opencpn
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install opencpn

Thanks, Pavel. You must spend all your time reading Cruisers Forum, waiting for a question to pop up. Every time I ask something you post an answer in just a few minutes.

Is the beta PPA different from the stable PPA? I suspected something like that but it looks the same to me.

On the 64-bit machine I must have already had the beta PPA configured because it installed 4.2.1706 right away. On the 32-bit machine I had to configure the beta PPA following your instructions above to get 4.2.1706 installed. I had installed 4.2.0 from a PPA on the 32-bit machine, so I don't know what was different.

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.2.1706 Release

The difference is that the beta PPA contains packages not ready for general use. Once they get "stable enough", they are simply copied to the stable PPA.
At this moment the two PPAs are almost the same - the only difference between the two is that the beta one has OpenCPN 4.2.1706 as even all the plugins we package were updated and pushed to the stable one with 4.2.0 release.
They will again diverge much more during the next regular beta cycle leading to the future major OpenCPN release, just to get synchronized once again when the next OpenCPN stable release is done.

I understand that. My question is how is the configuration for the two PPAs different? I think I found the answer.

stable: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:opencpn/opencpn
beta: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nohal/opencpn

Is that right? The download page (Download OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage)
has a line to "Configuring Ubuntu PPA" in both the stable and beta sections, but it's the same link. Users following those directions will never find the beta PPA. I edited the page but I'd like you to check it for correctness.

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.2.1706 Release

Fabbian...
The beta section of the download page has the link to the beta PPA and the configuration instructions explicitly state "There are two PPA repositories, one for stable versions only and one that includes beta versions. If you want the beta versions replace the "ppapencpn/opencpn" string in the following instructions with "ppa:nohal/opencpn"."

Ah, I now see you just added it yourself, thanks!

The links to the PPAs are appropriate to each section, but I didn't know how to add the right PPA to my configuration. I'm glad my edit to the configuration instructions was correct. Thanks for checking it.
