Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

@cagney...
re: "The selection button should always include an option of going directly to the selection dialogue. Am I missing something??"

After playing with this a bit, I agree with you. The question is how to do the UI to allow immediate jump to the select dialog, bypassing the graphical selector loop. Context menu on the Request button?

@jp, any ideas?

Thanks
Dave

ALT no longer works for MENUBAR on Windows
The Menu Bar | Official OpenCPN Homepage
Quote:
The Menu Bar can be activated i two ways.
It can be on all the time by ticking Options->User Interface -> Show Menu Bar.
If this choice is not on, the Menu Bar can be shown temporarily by using the hot-key "Alt".
As son as the screen is used, for example by panning or double clicking for an Object Query, the Menu Bar disappears.

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

hello dave,

Lenovo U41, W 8.1.
With a new compiled version that Jean Pierre send to me this day.

1° If I use "Alt" touch screen, the menu bar do not appear. This is different from what Gleason said in previous post. With this version compiled by Jean Pierre, with alt key, the menu bar does not appear.

2° I confirm one of my previous post. Chartdownloader do not work.

Rick,

I put this in Flyspray back in June (FS#1770 - Alt key does not toggle Menu Bar), and I closed it as NOT a bug when Dave (bdbcat) replied

This feature was removed in OCPN 4.1

It is unreliable in some platforms, especially XP.

See:

We could try to re-enable for Win7, I suppose....

"The question is how to do the UI to allow immediate jump to the select dialog, bypassing the graphical selector loop. Context menu on the Request button"

yes but the context menu already exist and is an alternative to the button
in case it is set invisible, thus the process is identical

We could add a menu option in case of manual process to bypass the selector.
we would have
-"start a request with a new area" to start selector
-"start a request with the previous area" to open the dialog

the other solution (witch I prefer ) could be to add a "keep this area" option in the dialog.
When this option is selected, the button (or the menu ) bypasses the selector and open directly the dialog

With the same package built from very last git on W10/VS2013, I can confirm that "Alt" doesn't work.
It doesn't work either with a built on Vista/vs2010

For the chartdownloader it's a bit more complicated (tested only with the w10/vs2013 package)
Sometime it works, sometime not. When I say "works" I mean I can download charts.
I think I have isolated a case when it doesn't work
- start O
- open the plugin
- exit the plugin by "OK" or "Cancel"
then in this O session, impossible to start loading
I get (0/unknow) and it stays like that until I cancel loading

But this process seems to work :
- start O
- open the plugin
- start loading directly.

another bug : if I click accidentally on "OK" or "Cancel" wile trying to load ( or loading) , the dialog is closed, but the tool bar stay invisible and exiting O leads to a crash
I thing while loading process is running, these buttons should be unactivated or should stop the process.

waiting for the next beta to be sure it's not a build problem on my machine

This sounds good to me.
@cagney: OK?

@jp...
I await a Pull Request.

Thanks for the quick response.

Yes,
ALT no longer works for MENUBAR on Windows (it used to work for me Win7)
OpenCPN Manual description The Menu Bar | Official OpenCPN Homepage

If this were to be made to work, it would give quicker/easier control of AIS settings and additional settings such as ScaledTargets could be added.

Hakan/Gilletarom...

Re: ALT key inoperative...

Is this a recent change? How about on "official" 4.1.1108 Beta?

It works fine for me on Win7 and XP. If the menuBar is enabled, the Alt key selects the menuBar, then arrow keys or shortcut keys can be used to navigate.

Any more clarification?

Thanks
Dave

Yes, that is how it works now and that's good enough. From the beginning of the menu bar the Alt key was making the bar fall open and another Alt hide it again. This was not practical since the key combination Alt-Tab was disturbed. It may be some of you still have that Alt behavior in mind?

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

hello Dave, Hello All,

I still have my house, a very old PC (over 10 years of age) that runs under W XP SP3. On this computer, O 4.0 runs very well.

I just downloaded, and installed on this old PC, without problem, the original O 411108.

BUT :
O 411108 is not running on this PC. When I click the icon O411108, the answer is "Not a Win 32 software".

Re: OpenCPN Beta test 4.1.1108 Release

Hello Dave,

On my Lenovo U41, W 8.1.

I uninstalled the compiled version yesterday by Jean Pierre and reinstalled the original O411108 release.

I just find that the use of the Alt key is ineffective. The menu bar is not displayed.

re: "I just find that the use of the Alt key is ineffective. The menu bar is not displayed."
The menu bar will not ever be opened by the Alt key. You've to check the option "Use Meny bar" in tools-User interface.
Then is the Alt key used to move focus to the bar so you can navigate with the arrow keys.
