Opencpn: Average Speed over last x seconds / minutes: How to display?
Hi,
I haven't found a post on this topic yet but if there is one please direct me to it.
I use Opencpn with the dashboard plugin. I use the dashboard to show me my speed over ground (data coming from GPS). The problem while sailing
offshore is that the speed often jumps by 2-3 knots up and down. I assume this is mostly due to waves. This makes it difficult to see the current average speed.
What I would like to know is the current speed but without jumping that much. I assume this could be achieved by averaging speed over the last 30 seconds or so.
Does anybody know how to do so? Maybe use a specific plugin?
Thanks a lot
Patrick

Right click on the dashboard window and choose preferences. Then in the Apearance tab you find a setting for the SOG damping. Find a setting that works for you

For Routes and Route Planning
https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...mark_manager&s[]=route&s[]=manager#routes
Look down to see "ETA Route Planning Now" How to set the start time.

Sounds like a great adjustment...
But am using oc 4.4.0, with a dashboard 1.2. Cannot find the dampen function in appearances. And could not find an upgrade to dashboard on the oc site—did it get incorporated into oc in later versions?
What am I missing?
Thanks in advance

Not sure when it was introduced, but I am using 4.8, and there the setting is available. So maybe you should upgrade your instance of O.

Interesting thought, but we are mid-season, in a somewhat remote location and I am very adverse to upsetting what already works.... gremlins, Murphy and all.
Is dashboard a plugin on 4.8? I take it not....
Cheers

You can run parallel installs - no problem.
What system platform you are on?
Same for beta testing for example.

Re: Opencpn: Average Speed over last x seconds / minutes: How to display?
Install to say OpenCPN-4.8.0 for example, creating a completely new program directory.
But first make sure your Dashboard (You say you have v4.8.0, and there is only one 4.8.0) doesnt have the setting, as Dashboard is included in the download for v4.8.0!

Dampen SOG and COG (IR Filter) There are 2 parameters in the Dashboard→Preferences→Appearance dialog for damping of SOG and COG. A value of 1 means no filtering. Higher values mean ever slower response of the instrument. The max filter value is 100 which is pretty slow. This filter works almost exactly like a mechanical filter that uses an oil damped indicator dial. It will respond gradually to a change in course or speed. A typical filter value of 10 seems to work pretty well.

I am on win7. Is 4.8 stable enough on win7? The parallel concept be worth a try...
What else does 4.8 do over 4.4?
Thx

Lordy, kjc, Do a parallel install of 4.8.0 and you will soon forget you have 4.4!

Lordy,
Why does the chart quilting function seem much less effective in 4.8? When I move I get lots of blue screens until I click down in chart level.
And under parallel are they both using the same charts and Navobj files?
Cheers

Yes they are.
And you should always do a complete Chart DB Update
Options > Charts > Chart Files > Full Database Update.
And If you are using ENC and have time click Prepare ENC which makes all the SENC files. Takes a long time but speeds up the use later.
