Opencpn android very slow

Hi all,

I am trying to get opencpn (payed android app) working properly on my lenovo p10 tablet (64/4gb version). I have installed several dutch enc's to test the app (from https://www.vaarweginformatie.nl/frp...page/infra_enc, 'zeeland compleet'). I find that when using the app with these charts, the app is terribly slow. When showing only two or three maps at the same time it is doable, with four or more it is very slow (+10 s waiting when scrolling or zooming). I told opencpn to prepare the enc charts. Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be? Or am I expecting to much from the app? With this speed, I consider the app practically unusable for planning.

Any help is much appreciated!

Regards,

Daniël

Daniël

Something not right here, No zoom should take 10 secs, even on very old technology tablets.
To investigate:
Please try to load some NOAA raster charts only, and check performance there. This would create the simplest display performance requirement.

Thanks
Dave

Re: Opencpn android very slow

My daughter also has the same problem with the paid Android version of opencpn, latest version, she just bought it. She runs only NOAA raster charts on a Samsung Tab 2 (10.1) from 2012. I have the same app from two years ago, not updated, running only rasters, on the same type and vintage tablet, and have a much smaller problem (delay), but it's still there. On her machine it makes it almost unusable.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Opencpn android very slow

Hi Dave,

I've installed some NOAA raster and also enc charts from the noaa, from hawai. With these charts there is no problem, so I think the problem is mainly in the charts I was using. I found out that compared to the noaa charts they only consist of detailed maps, when zooming they don't switch to larger, less detailed charts (see attached image from my laptop) .
If I set the display category to base it does make a difference, but it is still quite slow.
Another (smaller) problem I ran into, is that although I downloaded a more detailed basemap, but the basemap remains the low detailed version. Am I missing something?

Thanks for your reply!

Re: Opencpn android very slow

The problem I'm having with the basemap appears to be quite stubborn, I am still unable to change to a higher resolution map. I didn't have this problem on my laptop an on my tablet I've had no problems with installing different other maps. The highest resolution version is downloaded by the app and the folder is among the charts directories. I tried removing the original basemap from its folder, but then only Ocean remains (with the higher resolution basemap installed). I also reinstalled the app, without success.

And apparently something went wrong with the image, let's try again:

The Dutch InlandENCs are very detailed.
After installing them, run "Prepare all ENCs" from Options|Chart files
Go for a tea then if you have a bigger collection of charts....

I've indeed done that, actually haven't ran them without it. But even prepared they are way to slow to be usable. I guess I simply shouldn't want to use these particular maps on my tablet (was using them for testing purposes anyways)

Ah sorry, that was a bit unclear. The screenshot is ment to illustrate the many detailed charts that are displayed at the same time. I suppose I've accepted that these charts are very slow, because other charts (both vector and raster) are a lot faster.
Main thing I'm struggling with now is the base map. I've attached some screenshots from my settings with charts and the folder that contains the downloaded basemap. Can you isolate a reason from these images why the more detailed basemap doesn't show?

Re: Opencpn android very slow

It looks like the base map did not unzip after the download.

Re: Opencpn android very slow

Does anyone know if it is possible to load an older version of the Android app of Opencpn?

An older version works fairly well on my older Samsung Tab 2, but the newest version does not work very well on my daughter's Samsung tab 2 of the same vintage.

Re: Opencpn android very slow

Hi Dave,

I have ver 1.0.19 on my tablet and it does well, perhaps that would work better for her.

The problem she's been having is that if she zooms out much at all, it takes forever to complete the image. Literally 1-3 minutes, or the machine just locks up and has to be rebooted.

Thanks for your help
