OpenCPN 5.0 w/mbtiles

Anyone using mbtiles with OpenCPN v5? I'm thinking about replacing 100's of Google Earth KAP files with SASPlanet mbtiles. I'm curious if anyone's used this while underway and whether the working as overlays instead of quilted tiles works and/or are the limitations or problems.

I like bundling various zoom levels into an mbtile. As an overlay, I can see making the mbtile active and then zoom in/out the different zoom levels. Constructing a multi-zoom level mbtile is a lot easier than managing different KAP files. Do mbtiles work as well as KAP files and/or is there a performance issue?

Unless I'm missing something, I think this is a great feature. I'm looking forward to exploring in more detail.

Would like to hear what folks have to say about mbtiles.
Thanks
Don

Mbtiles is a fantastic feature of OpenCPN. Unlike kap charts there is no color loss with mbtiles.

The new version of Sat2Chart (formerly called GE2KAP) supports creating mbtiles as well as kaps from SasPlanet. It will even create charts from multiple maps at the same time so for instance you can select Google, Earth, Bing, Navionics and C-Map and get an mbtiles chart for the same path/polygon.

Its available here:

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 w/mbtiles

I've got a couple of users of Sat2Chart that are converting 1000's of their kap charts for the Pacific to mbtiles.

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 w/mbtiles

Paul,
I agree, mbtiles is a great feature. I'm also redoing my 1,000's of KAP files into mbtiles. What I'm doing is using SasPlanet alone, making 2 sets of mbtiles: (1) high level with zoom levels of 11 and 13 and (2) harbor/cove level at 16 and 18.

I don't see any issues with OpenCPN. Having to select/deselect the mbtile takes a bit of getting used to, though not a problem. The way I expect to use this is leaving the high-level charts for crossings, then zoom into the more-detailed charts. Since we have 3 different chartplotters (ancient Raymarine at helm, A75 nav-station, laptop w/OpenCPN), I haven't seen the need to blend or overlay charts.

I like where GE2KAP/Sat2Chart is going. I'm going to look at different chart sources. It might be nice to have the Navionics along with GE/Bing satellite. With the KAP files, I used the GE2KAP's route feature to automate downloading. What I'm finding with mbtiles is I don't need all features that Sat2Chart provides. I may rethink this as I experiment more with mbtiles.

Thanks!!!
Don

Hi Paul, I hve successfully used GE2KAP a couple of times in the past. Thanks for great program.

I just downloaded Sat2Chart and was met with the message to update ooRex from 4.3 to 5.+. I did this, although 5 seems to be a beta.

On running Sat2Chart I am getting the following message and need some help getting started again.

---------------------------------------

Error 98.903 running progam
C:/SAT2CHART/SAT2CHART.V5.0.0.0/Sat2Chart.rex line 73

Execution error.
Unable to load library "Sat2ChartFuncs".

I've been using various versions SASPlanet for a while now and have yet to see C-Map as an option for the map source. Am I missing something? I know there is a difference in the options offered in the varions versions of SASPlanet, is there a particular version that will provide the C-Map option?

BTW, MBTiles under OpenCPN is a wonderful thing

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 w/mbtiles

are you aware that converting kap to mbtiles results in loss of data?

What do you mean by that. Who converts kaps to mbtiles? Sat2Chart doesn't.

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 w/mbtiles

More than likely your virus program has quarantined the Sat2ChartFunc.dll. Open it and see if you can find its quarantined and un-quarantine. This varies by virus program.
If you are using Norton as your anti-virus program it will probably quarantine the Sat2ChartFuncs.DLL.
To fix this do the following:
Open norton
Go to security
Go to history
Click on the Sat2Chart file quarantined
Go to recommended action
Restore
