opencpn 4.8 issues

hi all
anyone else finding 4.8 for windows the most unstable prog to date.
mine crashes all the time , move the map (not responding), load plugins the screen loads then it goes white and crashes, change charts doesn't respond then crashes.
I have removed it removes all opencpn on my system then reinstalled it but its still useless.
is there a major conflict anyone knows of.

driving me nuts

Art...

4.8 has been released for months now, with no significant up-tick in instability noted from the field.

You may have an obsolete plugin loading without knowing it.
Try to run without plugins for a bit, and see how that goes. If it works better, add one plugin at a time until you identify the offender.

Use the logfile to identify plugin loads.

What system are you running? Win 10?

Thanks
Dave

Re: opencpn 4.8 issues

I am having a problem with 4.8.0 on linux. There is one or more routes or waypoints that cause this version to crash when I zoom or pan to it. I have tried deleting them to isolate which it is but I have so many. Was not a problem on the previous release.

Should I just go back and wait to try the next release?

For the white plugin screen problem the simplest solution is to delete the folder where the plugin dll's reside. Then install 4.8.0 again. That will fix that issue.

Can you send the routes and waypoints files by email? If so we may be able to sort out the problem.

What version of Linux?

What charts are you using?

Re: opencpn 4.8 issues

I am running Ubuntu 16.04 with CM93 charts. I have trimmed the navobj.xml file down from 11M to under 10K so it will be easy to send when I know where to send it.

You can upload it here renamed as .doc to overcome size limitations.

I tried to duplicate the problem but could not. The only thing I can think is maybe the CM93 chart has some issue. I am probably not using the same chart files as you use.

In the file you uploaded there are only waypoints. I did not see any routes. I centered the chart on each of the waypoints and found no problems.

Re: opencpn 4.8 issues

Thank you for looking. I deleted all the tracks and routes to no effect. I then started deleting waypoints trying to find which were causing problems. I think there may be more than one. All near the south end of Sardinia. The original file size was 11MB.

I see nothing odd about any of the waypoints. All was fine till 4.8.0. I am in port for the winter so no knew waypoints have been added and the charts have not changed. There have been plenty of other software updates of course but those seem an unlikely cause of the problem.

I will try to isolate it to a single waypoint then post that here.

Thanks,
Rick

Hi,

I can't reproduce it either but IIRC We had another report like this one, with a missing yellow donut.

So missing anchor_blu icon?
-What's in your log around:

Looking for UserIcons at /home/xxx/.opencpn/UserIcons
with xxx your linux user name?

- What's in this directory?

- And In /usr/share/opencpn/uidata/markicons ?

- In your gpx file could you replace anchor_blu with triangle

- Moreover If you known gdb and it's installed you can run within openpcn directory:
Code:
gdb opencpn
r
and after it crashed
Code:
bt
In case your opencpn installation is with debug info (unlikely) it would be very useful.

Don't bother if gdb is not installed on your computer.

Thanks

Re: opencpn 4.8 issues

In Windows, whenever you install a new update of Opencpn, you really should Rebuild the Chart Database completely. I do that without fail now because it generally clears up issues with charts, jumpiness and other things.

I wonder if this should be done for Linux?

Re: opencpn 4.8 issues

Rick...

You rebuild your chart database way more than necessary, but that is your wish, and more power to you.

But....
There really is no need to rebuild the chart db on OCPN upgrades within a 4.x.x series. Really.

Thanks
Dave

Re: opencpn 4.8 issues

I fixed my crash problem. There were two icons, anchor_blu and marina_grn, that no longer exist in 4.8.0. I changed both of those to triangle and opencpn no longer crashes.

I should point out that I did not create those two symbols. I just picked them off the menu in the previous release.

Thank you for your help.
