Re: OpenCPN 4.8.4 on Macbook Air crashes after about 1-6 hours

Are your vector charts active when crashing?
Can you publish the latest crash report?

03:44:34 +12: OpenGL-> Renderer String: Intel HD Graphics 5000 OpenGL Engine
03:44:34 +12: OpenGL-> Version reported: 2.1 INTEL-12.9.22

In order to isolate the problem: did you try to run with OpenGL=Off?
There are issues with some Intel Graphics drivers under various architectures which need patches.

Another issue that we had in the past (< OpenCPN 5.0): I remember a patch to prevent some sort of AIS targets to crash OpenCPN.

The difference between using the still beta version of wxWidgets 3.1.3 and your own patches of wxWidgets is that wxWidgets 3.1.3 has been already tested a lot.

Gerhard...

Do we really need to go through this again?

wxWidgets 3.1.3 does not exist and as such was not tested at all. That the current master branch of wxWidgets contains "3.1.3" does not change anything on that.

There is a single significant problem in wxWidgets 3.1.2 we NEED to address, fixed by a trivial patch commited in https://github.com/wxWidgets/wxWidge...637663de351cb7 and that is what we will do, unless we find some other real reason to do something else.

CarCode:

I asked you this question above and you never answered. Is this not something that would show up in a log file somewhere? What are you seeing that indicates to you that it is the usb gps?

If there were some sort of problem with the gps, wouldn't there be some sort of message in a log somewhere that indicates that as a problem?

Not disagreeing with you, but just asking if there is a basis for assuming it is a gps problem as opposed to something else.

bcn,
I have turned off OpenGL and will see if that makes a difference. I was not running Vector charts when this problem occurred. I also do not have AIS running on this system.

Thanks

Re: OpenCPN 4.8.4 on Macbook Air crashes after about 1-6 hours

Steve...
The crash log is exactly as inconclusive as the first one. The logfile suggests that you, or something, initiated OpenCPN shutdown before it crashed - does it sound like something you are able to explain?
Anyway, it seems you did not even update to 4.8.8 and the only version where we will investigate and fix anything actively is 5.0.

To your earlier question to Gerhard, he does not know. What he does know is that Prolific drivers in general are problematic, which is true.

Re: OpenCPN 4.8.4 on Macbook Air crashes after about 1-6 hours

From your log:
________
15:07:50 +12: 2019-06-30
15:07:50 +12: ------- Starting OpenCPN -------
15:07:50 +12: Version 4.8.4 Build 2018-04-21
15:07:50 +12: wxWidgets version: wxWidgets 3.0.4 Apple Mac OS X 64 bit wxMac

You can run parallel installs of OpenCPN under macOS.

For example rename your 4.6.4 version to something and then install 5.0 plus the actual plug-ins.
5.0 will be then "OpenCPN" under Applications

Now this sounds interesting... Just renaming the app file/container will not mess up being able to go back and run that version? If I install 5.0, I presume I would want a clean install, not upgrade? Or does it even give that option?

Obviously, I'm afraid the new install will mess up what is working now. That is why I was planning to upgrade the end of cruising season (Nov) Don't want to lose waypoints, tracks and routes currently stored and charts, kaps etc.
This was why I was trying to fix 4.8.4 instead of going to 5.0. When I had to make that decision a lot of the plugins weren't updated for the Mac although that seems much better now.

Thanks for the suggestion,
Steve

BTW, it crashed again this morning while we were diving. This was after turning off OpenGL and restarting OCPN.

Steve...

Simply back up /Applications/OpenCPN and <your user directory>/Library/Preferences/opencpn and you will be able to return exactly where you were.

Re: OpenCPN 4.8.4 on Macbook Air crashes after about 1-6 hours

I think maybe I will try the parallel versions as bcn suggested.

Can you verify that there have been no structure or format changes to navobj.xml.XX in the migration from 4.8.4 - 5.0?

So, if I install a parallel version as bcn suggests and just copy navobj.xml into the new /USER/Library/Preferences/opencpn that should put 5.0 to right where I am now??

Thanks for all the assistance everyone. I realize I'm probably being paranoid and if we were done for this season I wouldn't be giving it a second thought.

Re: OpenCPN 4.8.4 on Macbook Air crashes after about 1-6 hours

You can of course back-up the navobj file.

We are running always the new and development versions in parallel, i.e. with the same configuration file and navobj file. No issue.

Be aware about the Window Resize issue with Mojave 10.14.5 and O5.0:
sometimes the screen will not be rendered completely when opening OpenCPN. After two or three cycles I'm getting a "normal" screen again. Split screen does not work for this reason neither.
