OpenCPN 4.2.0 Course Up

Tested on a fresh install of Linux 15.10 with updates:

OpenCPN 4.2.0 from the nohal repository. I normally use North up for navigation, but I am currently installing a Simrad 4G radar and wanted to check Heading up display. I am using a Digital Yacht HSC 100 fluxgate compass configured to send HDT sentences. See below for what I got. It looks like the chart has been turned in the wrong direction.

Cheers, ....Erik.

Hmm, seems that you have mounted your HSC 100 180 degrees wrong. Try to mount it 180 degrees of current position.

Re: OpenCPN 4.2.0 Course Up

Hi Petter,

I don't think so. The boat is tied to the dock and is pointing NNE. I may be off by a few degrees as I have not calibrated the fluxgate, but not 180 degrees. Also, the instrument view says 026T. Another suggestion?

Cheers, ....Erik.

What if you temporally disable the fluxgate ? does this affect the chart orientation ( just for try to locate the source of error)

I don't think there is such a things as "heading up". There is only North Up and Course Up.

Hi Dave,

Sorry, I was not paying attention for a couple of days.

The picture should be attached (if it works).

Cheers, ....Erik.

Re: OpenCPN 4.2.0 Course Up

Petter,

You may be on to something. I turned off the fluxgate and I still have the chart turned 25 degrees to the right. Since the fluxgate shows 026, I made the assumption that head up was used but implemented incorrectly.

The question now is: where does O get its course from in "Course UP" mode? I do not have any route enabled and I "only" receive $AIVDI and various GPS sentences (I'll check those next) sent on a serial/USB port. The boat is firmly tied to the dock.

Cheers, ....Erik.

Re: OpenCPN 4.2.0 Course Up

Very not sure but I THINK I needed the HDM sentence for "course up" not HDT. This was using a homemade fluxgate compass.

Re: OpenCPN 4.2.0 Course Up

ve7mdl...

OCPN gets course-up information from any NMEA sentence containing COG (Course over Ground).

OCPN does not use compass heading (HDT/HDM) for course-up mode.

Re: OpenCPN 4.2.0 Course Up

Hi Dave,

Thanks, I think I found that out this evening. It seems that I get a consistent 337 COG even though I am firmly tied to the dock. Strange, but that explains a lot.

Thanks again.

Cheers, ....Erik.

Re: OpenCPN 4.2.0 Course Up

Mike,

The HDM sentence is the magnetic heading. HDT is the true heading. The Digital Yacht HSC 100 can be set to ouput either.

Re: OpenCPN 4.2.0 Course Up

The rotationctrl plugin allows for heading up as well as route up etc... and about 6 different possible modes. You can also add an adjustment angle of say 90 for course right, -90 for course left, and 180 for course down.
