Re: Opencpn 4.1.1108 Documentation

Where does one find Pavel's latest version please?

I can grab that when I have internet access; fairly regularly at the moment but only via my phone.

Re: Opencpn 4.1.1108 Documentation

I wasn't trying to say that we should document every build; rather to use a recent build to document 4.2.

I was under the impression that Rick was going to organize an effort to update the documentation for 4.2. It makes sense to divide up the work.

I'll contact Rick. Actually Rick contacted me.

Re: Opencpn 4.1.1108 Documentation

Rick, I'm going to tackle the changes to quilting assuming no one else is doing it.

1. How/where do I down load the proper build?
2. I'm not sure what to do with screen shots: where and how to upload, should the screens be cropped to hide the O version? some guidelines?
3. I can create a 1'st version of GoodAnchorages until he updates it. It already has a Read me file.
4. I can take a look at squidio as well. Vers with new library avail?

I'll probably volunteer for more, but need to accomplish something first.

Dave

Chris this has the link to Pavels compile, but right now I believe it is older.

David this will get you to most recent Windows Beta version (complied 1 hr ago). It works for me on Dell XPS Inspiron and SurfacePro3 both with Win10. Thank you!

Creating and Editing the OpenCPN User Manual

I have tried to explain in the Plugins Documentation Thread how to
  1. Add a Page
  2. Edit a Document in both Rich Text and Simple text (HTML) screens
  3. Save Screenshots
  4. Edit Screenshots
  5. Upload Screenshot to your File Directory
  6. Insert Screenshots into the page you are editing.
Please look starting here:

Re: Opencpn 4.1.1108 Documentation

I have added to Opecpn User Manual > Getting Started > Installing Charts
Installing Charts | Official OpenCPN Homepage

Which tries to consolidate all the main pages and links related to Charts, including the Chart Downloader Plugin in one page at the beginning under"Getting Started" because users continue to ask about charts. The subject needs higher recognition in the Outline because it is asked so frequently.

This may not be the optimal or best organization at this point, so please make any suggestions known so we can discuss them.

The Program now has a slightly different structure than version 4.0 regarding Charts under Options > Charts
  • Chart Files
  • Vector Chart Display
  • Chart Groups
  • Tides & Currents
  • Chart Downloader
This is quite structured and I think the OpenCPN Manual should duplicate it if at all possible, with each Chart Tab as separate Topic, but together. The manual largely follows the program, but regarding charts, I think it falls short right now. There is excellent information in here about a very dense topic, but we need to the first things first, for the benefit of the new user. I would submit that some of these topics might be considered "Advanced"?

Basic Features has subtopic
All About Charts
  • Installing Charts (Chart Files Tab)
  • Status Bar
  • Chart Info
  • Scaling Charts
  • Chart Quilting
  • Chart Groups (Chart Groups Tab)
  • Vector Charts (Vector Charts Tab)
  • s63 Charts
  • Chart Formats
  • Chart Sources
  • Needs to be added -Chart Downloader (Tab)

Also for some reason Installing Charts is under "Supplementary Software" (yet it is an essential element)

And currently the Chart Downloader Plugin is not described under Plugins, but should have an entire section devoted to it under Basic Features - All About Charts in the main manual, because it is now rolled into the program.

So in summary, I think we should have something like the organization below in the updated manual.

Basic Features has subtopic
All About Charts

Options > Charts >Tabs
  • Chart Files Installing-Tab (move out of Supplementary Software?)
  • Vector Charts-Tab
  • Chart Groups-Tab
  • Chart Downloader-Tab (Add this documentation)
Details, Features & Resources (?)
  • Status Bar
  • Chart Info
  • Scaling Charts
  • Chart Quilting
  • s63 Charts
  • Chart Formats
  • Chart Sources
Basic Features has subtopic
Tides & Currents
- Should be moved up to under All about Charts

I do not know if we should split All About Charts into two subcategories or Simply to have Chart sections like this:
Basic Features
Chart Tabs - Options
Chart Details, Features & Resources

Which would be more usable from the new user standpoint?
Which would be more useful for older users?
I think Installing Charts is "operational" and part of the mechanics of the program. It is not "Supplementary software". The chart files themselves are provided by others and not part of the program.

Any thoughts?

Re: Opencpn 4.1.1108 Documentation

David, Thank you for reviewing and improving the sections
  • Status Bar
  • Chart Info
  • Scaling Charts
  • Chart Quilting
That was a big help! Looks good to me. Learned some things.

It also got me thinking about how Charts Section is organized.

Re: Opencpn 4.1.1108 Documentation

I've done 1-10 of the Changelog for Release 4.1.602. Its taken 1.5 hours so far. I have taken the necessary screenshots but must upload and add to the User Manual.
I am going to complete Release 4.1.602 Items 1-40 making all necessary changes in the documentation. See what I have done so far in the doc below. I've also attached the full ChangeLog.txt including 4.1.1108

We need someone to start doing the second section #41-#60 for Release 4.1.925.
There are 3 others after that in addition to some reorganization.

We need some serious help to get this done. So please lend a shoulder to the effort. In Architectural Schools we call this a "Charette", which in times past was the cart that came around to pick up students projects for the review. Obviously, the "Charette" came at the end of long hours of preparation.

Re: Opencpn 4.1.1108 Documentation

I've started reordering the Basic Section with the new user in mind. Most important things at the top...
  • Toolbar Buttons
  • Menubar
  • Setting Options
  • GPS Setup and Status *
  • Charts
  • Tides & Currents
  • Right Click Menu
  • Zooming
  • Auto Follow **
  • Display Orientation **
  • Marks and Routes
  • Ship Track
  • Man OverBoard
  • Data Connections
* We need someone to distill into very simplistic terms, how to Setup a GPS easily and add it to the GPS Status page.

** We need someone to split Auto Follow and Display Orientation into two separate pages.

I moved "Keyboard Shortcuts" to "Advanced" where it belongs.

Should "Right Click Menu" and "Zooming" go back up under "Menubar"?

The Charts section needs more work.

Re: Opencpn 4.1.1108 Documentation

We need a volunteer to Edit the page "GPS setup and status"
Goal: Distill into very simplistic terms, how to Setup a GPS for
Linux
Windows
Android
You may copy isolated items from Data Connections.

--
We need a Network knowledgeable volunteer to Edit the page
"Data Connections". Has gotten quite big and needs a through review by someone who really understands networking.

--
I've split Auto Follow and Display Orientation into two separate pages.

Re: Opencpn 4.1.1108 Documentation

I have gone through the User Manual
1. Shortening Names in the outline where feasible.
2. Labeling URL's so that the new outline is readily apparent, and the files can be sorted reasonably well from a file browser. (the system should be apparent). Upper level outline is noted first in the Url name. The primary level starts just below the User Manual. Most pages now have a URL similar to these:
  • Plugins_external_radar_garmin
  • Basic-gps
  • Adv-charts
The place to enter the URL is towards the bottom of the edit view for the page "URL Path Settings"

3. In addition the plugins page was getting too long so I separated it into External Plugins and Included Plugins.
4. Basic and Advanced have been reorganized.
5. There is still work to do on Basic > Charts
6. Goals were organization & clarity in the outline for the new user.
7. Plugins need some help.
--Mike Rasbats has provided writeups for DR, oBabel and he has been working on Survey.
-- Dirk has given us the great Nema Converter, someone else should provide documentation (blank BSB4 page is made)
-- We need to get Chartdownloader documentation into the Wiki (assigned to Rick)
-- BSB4 is lacking documentation, but there is a BSB4 page for it.
-- There is still some work to do on ODraw and WatchDog, (Rick needs to add some alarms)
-- I have not looked at the other plugin pages, but time has marched on and they should be reviewed and updated.
8. I've started an "Editing this User Manual" page, and will be adding to it, in hopes that more users will voluntarily support the documentation of this fine program.

Re: Opencpn 4.1.1108 Documentation

For those volunteers who are willing to help document the work of the developers, there is again a page which describes how to edit the wiki.

I believe one sign of good software is it's documentation because it is indicative of the standards and organization of the team. This manual needs a lot of help because the developers have done so much. It is now time for Users to step up to the task.

opencpn.org/ocpn/Edit-User-Manual

Please do not delete this page!!! I don't want to waste any more time recreating it again.
