Re: OpenCPN 4.0 and ECDIS requirements (IEC61174)

I hope we can now focus on BCN's review/comparison and discuss how certain ocpn features can be better! Lets not get distracted. We do have a strong and very able community so it is a bit unfair to respond other than to suggest he learn more about opencpn as some of you suggested. Who knows, perhaps he'll change his mind and join the effort.

Re: OpenCPN 4.0 and ECDIS requirements (IEC61174)

- The Draw-Boundary plug-in is bringing us already solutions for EBL/VRM (and more features).
In this moment it requires the "daily-built" beta, so not for everybody and definitely not for "production". Feedback from testing is very welcome.

- Watchdog has route checker functions and I would love to see those in the Route Manager when planning routes.

- For the user interface the "panic-button" - i.e. go back to a predefined basic lay-out - is perhaps the most valuable item to consider

I see more and more people switching to Mac OS X. So I hope there will be more support with OpenCPN for Mac OS X in the future.

We're not switching, I'd rather have a touch screen windows laptop but there aren't any decent video editing software for Windows. We like to make videos and such so...

I have a Windows rig at home, I grew up on Windows and can troubleshoot a heck of a lot easier/naturally on Windows. But I can put windows on a Mac, not the other way around.

But from what I read, I thought the devs started with Mac..? I could be wrong there though.

Re: OpenCPN 4.0 and ECDIS requirements (IEC61174)

Hmm, and how am I supposed to use those programs on my Android Tablet and/or Android Smartphone?

You gave the impression that you classified OpenCPN as "fools gold". I have used several commercial chartplotting software but when it comes to versatility OpenCPN seems a winner. It might not be "gold" (yet) but imho it certainly qualifies for bronze. And bronze is not a bad choice at all for fitting out your boat .

FYI: For navigating the shallow and ever-changing Dutch Waddensea I use OpenCPN with several types of charts, ranging from Google Earth satellite photo's to official ENC's supplied by Rijkswaterstaat (RWS = part of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment). On the page where you can download their ENC's, RWS has a link to a freeware program to use these ENC's. Wanna guess what that program's called? ....

Oh, so a candidate to try and test the Celestial Navigation plug-in for OCPN!

Blackcrow, Yes,you have skills. Can you help us improve the Celestial Navigation plugin?
Sean and others have been working on it at various times and it has gotten considerably better. Also we have been working on the documentation.

I would suggest starting by using Opencpn 4.0
