OpenCPN 4.0.0 User Manual in PDF Format

From time to time, I am asked to present a class on navigation topics; the audience is an Owners' Group representing recreational sailboat owners in the 30-50' range.

My plan for the next class is to center on the use of OpenCPN. What I want to do is to distribute to attendees a copy of the OpenCPN 4.0.0 User's Manual in .pdf format (as well as to urge them to keep a copy of the manual in .pdf format on their laptop hard drives, so that it is available without the need for Internet access).

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall that the User's Manual for earlier versions was available in .pdf format, but I cannot find the same for 4.0.0. All I have found is a URL that takes one to a web page, and requires a new query to the web page for each chapter.

Is the User's Manual for 4.0.0 available in .pdf format?

I don't think it is in PDF format but it is available without internet access for sure. When you install the program the manual is also installed and accessible from within the program all without internet access.

Re: OpenCPN 4.0.0 User Manual in PDF Format

Well, you're quite right. I just assumed that, because clicking on the "Help" button brought me to my browser that it was accessing a web page. But when I look closer, I see that the browser is accessing the .html file written on my hard drive. This solves half of what I was trying to accomplish.

To be honest, my objective in distributing the manual in advance of the class was to stimulate the attendees to take a look at it and possibly speed things up (as well as to generate more useful questions). Oh, well.

Thanks.

Re: OpenCPN 4.0.0 User Manual in PDF Format

For what it might be worth, I now have the User's Manual in PDF format.

Thanks to transmitterdam, I found the HTML file that contains the User's Manual. A utility enabled me to convert that (with its embedded graphics) to an MS Word file, and another utility enabled me to convert the Word file to a PDF file.

Mission accomplished.

RKG...

Good job!

Maybe you could upload your work to drop box, or other cloud storage, and we can copy it into the opencpn.org resources list...

Good luck on your seminars

Re: OpenCPN 4.0.0 User Manual in PDF Format

I don't have any cloud storage accounts, but if someone wants to advise an account to which I can guest upload, I'd be happy to share the file.

Likewise, if anyone wants to duplicate what I did, here's a tip: where the OpenCPN files reside in c:\program files, the is a directory called "image.". Contains a large number of files constituting the screen shots and other graphics employed in the HTML manual file, and to which the HTML file points. Be sure your conversion utility has access to this " image" directory and contents or the conversion will fail.

Please click here to download the PDF version of the manual. Its a bit easier than RKG described, just open the HTML in Word and save it as PDF.

Reviving an old thread...

Can someone help me by providing the method to obtain a copy or create a PDF manual of the latest (4.8.2) version?
Thanks!

Re: OpenCPN 4.0.0 User Manual in PDF Format

Dokuwiki SiteExport plugin does not currently produce useable pdf or html of off the opencpn.org server, as it fails part way through.

The plugin does successfully complete when the process is done locally.

However, even these documents require extensive manual post processing.

I believe there are pdf's/html zips we've provided in the front part of the manual, however I believe these are not of v4.8.2.

Capable users are invited to provide these pdf's for other users, as most of this information has been been included in the installation of OpenCpn.

Httrack Freeware will allow you to download a website or part of it.
The result is not a pdf, but it can be used locally without internet access.
Maybe that helps?

Re: OpenCPN 4.0.0 User Manual in PDF Format

HTTrack website copier is here. Download it and make your copy of the current manual. Don't forget too add filters so that file links are not downloaded!
See FAQ https://www.httrack.com/html/faq.html#Q1b1

EG: add file filters for -*.zip, -*.7z and any other linked files you do not want downloaded.

Q: There are ZIP files in a page, but I don't want to transfer them. How do I do it?
A: Just filter them: add -*.zip in the filter list.

While these pdfs are being made, we also need a PDF or html of
Offline Advanced Features
Offline Plugins External

When those are done I will download them and upload them to the Wiki.
The download link below by RKG results in a 404 error and the file does not exist.
Thanks.
