Way Cool, manimaul! Whatever version, features, adjustments are adopted, all of these ideas are good contributions to CPN..this is the way open-source is supposed to work..collaboratively. atta boy.

ColdFusion...

I second that...just didn't want to give Will further headaches.. Could also make the cross a little bolder.

sinbad, in chartplotters the heading is the direction the bow of the boat is pointing (in degrees true). COG is widely used and is correct terminology for the predicted course (over ground!) I would prefer the terminology in OpenCPN to remain as it is.

Manimaul, the boat icon looks great, but why do we need the cross hairs? I loved the dot. I guess they could be combined...but am I just splitting (cross)hairs?

Currently it looks like a bombing target...

COURSE is the route direction you HOPE to follow..
COG is the ACTUAL direction the current, wind and a sloppy wheels-man will take you.
HEADING is the direction the bow is pointing at any one time.

It is up to you if you wish to deviate from these terms but beware of it's consequences.

Darn, beat me too it. I had visions of "Repent Sinner" blurting out of the speaker and the CD drive suddenly ejecting with a "pass the collection tray please" sign appearing on screen.

A smaller + would make it more apparent what it's intention was. Otherwise nice.

As an aside (which might explain my sudden bout of humour). My trusty assistant had exceeded himself today beyond his usual abilities. We were looking at OpenCPN and out of a mild and idle curiosity, I hovered the mouse over Australia and asked the destination. His answer was a tad out - China.

This confirmed he had no idea where two countries were:

I tried New Zealand; Korea??? Islands of the Pacific Rim seemed a challenge so I tried an obviously elementary one, Africa. His answer is an enormous relief to the Canadians who now know its not climate change but a sudden slippage in tectonic plates which has relocated their country to the Equatorial Zones.

I now know why he carries a Garmin around his own city.

Yeah, the boat looks a bit like a bishop's ceremonial head-dress. Just make the cross hair a +.

Sinbad,

A small suggested correction, Course is the direction you hope to follow, COG is the ACTUAL direction the current, wind and a sloppy wheels-man HAS TAKEN you.

The point being that COG is usually measured from past events, the future COG is often somewhat indeterminate, being dependant on future events.

As to magnetic or true, some sailors prefer to work with one or the other, it doesn't matter as long as it's made clear which is being used.

Ha, this is great!

I can assure you that my icon was not yet another catholic conspiracy to bring you into the fold of global theocracy. Actually, the pope asked me if I could make OpenCPN match his new pope-mo-ship.

Sorry Sinbad ... going back to the circle
If you don't like it... tough
Feel free to edit your own: Inkscape, ship.svg

Dave,

I'll post the icons in c++ soon. When can we expect the png / c++ integration into CVS?

Thanks,

Will

Android port?

Hi Dave

Have you thought about doing a port to the Android OS?

I can pick up a second hand G1 528 MHz phone running the opensource android OS for about £130 in the UK. Power consumption would be minuscule and it already has built in GPS..

It seems like there could be some demand;

And I thought the "old" original icon looked like a coffin, as I did not want to blame Dave, I used "tanker"...
I vote for a ±80% transparent boat with crosshair and a 100% transparent hole. The hole is to camouflage the cross ;-)
Wishes are free, 2 much sleeker boats joined will give a catamaran ;-)

Btw. Dave
I had no crashes since you put me on the other side of the date line and I conseqently switched GPS/AIS input off (or I did not try long enough). With GPS/AIS (shared port) they come by surprise, meaning to say, they come on different occasions and I could not repeat them and there are no irregular records in the log file, it is just cut off. As so many others reporting crashes so regularly, I did not bother to write down what happened, I'll start now. As I am a mouser, my crashes always have been the result of a mouse click.

Another irritation, there is a conflict with GPS-Gate. Like before, openCPN runs, clean exit, I start again, no other software accessing a GPS-Gate controlled port, but openCPN starts with an error: can not access Port 6, close other software. I look at GPSGate, can not find a mistake, restart GPSGate and openCPN and everything is fine. Some times GPSgate is not running any more too. Not regularly, but say 15%.Who is the culprit? don't know.

Kiwiradic..

NO arguments with that, COG is a rather floating TERM..
