manimaul..

You are the graphics designer,I just gave an outline of my thoughts.
Why the hole in the middle of the icon? If it represents the location of the AIS antenna it will vary from vessel to vessel and is placed automatically. Perhaps going a bit too far to have a choice of own vessel shape? i.e. sail, motor, catamaran etc.

Sorry to hear you don't like it. Well, hopefully it at least makes you hungry for gummy candies. I'll make one with a different shape. Anyone else have any shape suggestions?

Oh, the mark in the center represents the exact position. Take a look at Nobeltec and others, they do the same.

I think it's fantastic actually (sorry Sinbad). It looks just as shiney and abstract object-like as the rest of the icons and matches the look perfectly. I think the current icon looks far too much like an oil tanker for my liking (sorry Dave). Maybe we could/should try this one until anyone comes up with an mutually acceptable replacement?

Has anyone here ever played the 90s classic ports of call?

Any other opinions?

Hmmm, GUI discussions can take forever.... I am with Sinbad7. Simpler is better and the GPS antenna position should be shown together with the real size of the boat (width and length), when zoomed in. The last suggestion from manimaul looked to much like the tip of a fountain pen, sorry. The icons look great though

manimaul, I'm with sinbad on this. The icon just doesn't look right. It needs to look more yacht shaped, rather than house shaped!!! I think if you stretch the icon by say, 50% lengthwise then that would be a step in the right direction. Also, I'm not sure about the curved line down the centre - I think a straight line would be better.

Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

sorry, do not take it personally manimaul, but when I see this boat I remember biology, 40 years back, but like yesterday: Pentatoma rufipes ;-)

Let me google that for you

blubaju..

It is not necessary for the own ship icon to match the 'push buttons' at the top as it serves a different purpose. The proportion of the shape is incorrect and reminds me more of a cursor shaped like an ink pen. (sorry Manimaul,no offense intended) I like your finishing style though. Please let's see some alternatives..

I agree - I like the style (apart from the curved line down the centre) just not the shape.

Better make the ship icon a circle (with cross hairs), than you don't have to worry about the direction boats at anchor speed away :-)

903 looking good. Great job ...thank you!

Looking forward, I wouldn't be surprised if we have a choice between 30 different "own ship" icons within a year.

AFAIAC .....,the "tanker" or Manimaul's icon,... either is fine with me.

A thousand posts, and a lot of enthusiastic participation! Unfortunately my head tends to bounce off the keyboard after about five pages, so could someone PLEASE
post a "State of CPN" thread describing the current product to us plebians? Perhaps even a short tutorial that explores features?

blubaju,

Not P. rufipes, surely! The bow and stern would be reversed.

Sandy..

Have no fear,help is near
A fairly comprehensive help file with illustrations are being completed by Rhoel as we speak. It may coincide with the (official) new version of OpenCPN ,just around the corner.

OpenCPN is one of few navigation programs on the affordable level which can handle advanced chart formats such as .kap (BSB) S57 ENC and also the old version of cm93.

It has been designed by sailors for sailors so it has all you need and is also very intuitive in it's presentation. AND, best of all, IT'S FREE!!

It is going through a continuous updating process by some clever people with inputs from members with years of navigation experience. IT'S GOTTA BE GOD!!

Dave, Rhoel

Is there any way to keep the marks (map corrections, wrecks, diving spots) locked and the waypoints unlocked?

Thanks, Klaas
