Manimaul..

1. You've been busy.. the console looks great but perhaps a little too large? Also I would suggest putting the Course and speed panel at the top as it will always be present whether you are following a route or not. Why did you not also include the TRUE course value as shown from the boat icon?

2. I am still an advocate of an uncluttered chart area and a position/distance/bearing box being permanently located on my chart after a few seconds cursor inactivity, would ,I think in the long run irritate me.

3. Likewise the chart info box which is not accessed very often and also should include the chart description of coverage. Therefore it would be better to only show this info by a chart icon mouse over,or locate it in the Object query box.

To remove the status bar at the bottom is unnecessary and should continue to display it's present and future info. For those who does not want to use it just un-tick the Show Status bar.

Anyway, that's MY preferences,it may not suit others...

Now that OpenCPn is really good...OpenCPN lite for PDA??

Wouldn't that be nice...a lite version to run on a PDA...even better a version that would run on WinCE 4.2 or 5 PNA....

Actually all that's really needed is a simple CM93/2 viewer with GPS position indication..

A cheap Chinese $100 4.3" GPS, a CM93 viewer and wow..a hand held world chart capable GPS!

If someone, somewhere could come up with that ..............what a great addition to PC based OpenCPN

...here's hoping someone would like to take on that challenge....

I like many of the proposals going around.

Much of this needs to be configurable.

Status bar on/off, console on/off. Console contents, status bar contents, top bar contents, toolbar contents.

Could possibly eliminate the chart bar, as well. Toolbar buttons for chart types. They could gray out if none available for that area. Drop down for resolution.

But if you keep the chart bar, they have some real estate not being used. Could show chart name in the box. I'd like the bold bar around the active chart to be neon green or yellow instead of black. And the chart outlines need to be the same color as the chart blocks.

And, Dave, I know you are very partial to not allow much overzoom, but if I am following a GPS track from a previous trip, I may need to zoom right in to where 100-200ft fills the screen. Putting hash lines on the screen for overzoom works for me. I'd like almost unlimited zoom capabilities.

I'd like to be able to choose my cm93 resolution like I can on the other chart types. Myself, there are times I want the detailed chart to show at a larger zoom level. I'd also like the chart outlines for cm93 to show at a higher zoom level. Maybe that needs to be configurable, as well.

Here's what my screen looks like with all the chart outlines. I can't see where the CM93 coverage is, though. There again, it might should be configurable for all chart types.

full size view

EDIT: And configurable North up, chart up, course up, heading up.
EDIT2: And multiple chart windows. Different charts or different zoom levels and different orientations. Selections would apply to window with focus.

OPENCPN LAYOUT SUGGESTIONS

Hi all..

Sorry about the repetition of the layout suggestion. I didn't know how to do a direct upload and always had to upload items to my server before posting the link.
Click the chart twice for full screen. Now I know...

Dan..

Seems you have to zoom in somewhat to see the cm93 chart outlines.
See resolution at the bottom of the sample chart.
Click two times on the chart for full size.

Yep, I know. I'd like it to be configurable as to what zoom level they show up, and how many levels deep they show.

For the Okeechobee, I could only see the raster outlines, so I knew there were no ENCs there. I scrolled through it twice with rasters before I realized there was CM93 coverage.

Dave,

Here's a 5" GPS, with Bluetooth and FM transmitter for $107: DealExtreme: $107.89 5.0" LCD 372MHz CPU Windows CE 5.0 Bluetooth + GPS Navigator w/FM Transmitter + 2GB Maps SD

There's plenty of info on the net about getting Igo, Garmin etc nav s/ware working on them.....

Try searching their site for GPS, there's several diffent models. Shipping is included in all their pricing, I've ordered quite a few different things from them and always got them OK.

Dave,

I'm using the latest beta (running on Vista).

After starting up the PC and start using openCPN for the first time there is a good chance that openCPN crashes when I open the information tab on an activated route.

With crash I mean that I get a screen message telling me : the instruction at ...refenced memory at ...The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate.

After some openCPN restarts the problem disappears. ???

I have noted this behaviour since I installed 903 but blamed it on a computer malfunction caused by the very hot weather. We are back to normal now but the problem persists.

Dave,

On Sep. 03 BluBaj reported this bug on build 903:

Quote:
Uuuuups 903: postion of own ship does not recognize EASTERN hemisphere
position of AIS targets is correct (looks like, did not visually control)
I'm about to head south (from Toronto) and I want to use openCPN at the helm. Will this bug affect me? Do you plan to fix it soon?

Thanks,

Okay, same as me so its not a 32/64 computability issue which affects some windows programmes.

Does it still crash if AIS is disconnected - I have no NMEA/AIS connected at present.

Rhoel..

Seems to me it always happen in connection with the object query box. If I don't access them,no crashes.. It used to crash moving My ship icon a couple of times and also when Deleting all routes.. I think all the crashes I've had in the past was caused in one way or another accessing this box.

In the very early days we also had problems with massive (5000 vessels) AIS feeds but this has been resolved and is not causing problems any more.
