Kerrydeare....

I cannot reproduce the Radar range ring error on XP. (#1046)

Quote:
Was running Beta 903 on XP via a serial-USB converter yesterday on a local river here in NJ USA and noticed a peculiarity in the radar rings display. On an ENC chart I could set 2 rings at 0.0625 NM intervals and the rings displayed properly. On a corresponding RNC chart the same settings gave rings that were too small by what apeared to be an order of magnitude. If I next set 2 rings on the RNC chart at 0.625 NM intervals instead, the rings displayed at the proper scale. This effect was repeatable.
Can you give us specific chart numbers to look at, or maybe screenshots?

As a guess, was the RNC a "Non-north-up" oriented chart?

Anyone else on Windows platforms experiencing this?

Thanks
Dave

These are high resolution, so I won't post them inline. Here are two example user interface mock ups that I encourage you to look at:

http://matrixmariner.com/sites/defau...UIexample1.png

http://matrixmariner.com/sites/defau...UIexample2.png

a. no need for status bar
b. mouse hover on chart gives cursor position, distance and bearing from ship
c. current chart selection gets bold outline to clearify it's selection
d. arrow pointing north in bottom right corner for charts that are not north up and/or for future course up ... head up options
e. mouse hover over current selected chart icon gives chart info thus freeing space on top ribbon for ...
f. cog and sog displayed where chart info box was

Look improvements:
I. grey gradient in toolbar strips (i'm not sure if this is possible with wxwidgets)
II. black 1px border around green info box

These are mock ups, so don't get too upset if you don't like it or likewise too excited if you do.

Will, your mock ups are excellent and incorporate several minor but brilliant improvements that all add up to a slicker and more user friendly interface. I agree with all the changes you're suggesting. I was beginning to think OpenCPN couldn't get any better but you've gone and changed my mind (sorry Dave!)

Dave, I will test again with same charts at same locale on Tuesday, 08 Sep, and report.

Manimaul..

I think I have a more conservative view (in a double sense) to the positioning of the chart data and the running info.

1. The present chart bar should be reduced to a neat chart icon of similar size as the others. On mouse pass over it should display all relevant chart data including the text showing the named areas covered. This would relive the space for future features. Alternatively it could be placed in the Object query box as it is not info required on a constant basis.

2. The Course,Heading and Speed information would be much more practical in the existing Leg/Route box ,switching on click to Course/Speed. This box could also be movable around the screen to users choice.

3. The cursor position info could be displayed in the Status bar which I still feel serves a mission, now and in the future of new software version. For those who doesn't like it,it can be switched off on the toolbox.

I think Manis ideas of decluttering the display are nice in that they bring us back to Dave's original OpenCPN brief: A simple, neat, clear on-screen chart display.. Whilst conserving the new features

I just did a Delete all routes, shortly after which OpenCPN crashed. So it seems this error is not yet resolved at least for Vista...

This is a layout suggestion which I think is tidy and allows space for future expansion.

The additional Map icon can either be a mouse over to show map info, or can open the Object query box for same info.

The navigation console box is meant to be movable by the user to a convenient location and the lower track info box is switchable between Leg/Route. The Leg/Route panel need not be shown unless a route is being followed.

I have kept the status bar at the bottom for present and future use. As it can be disabled by the users it should not be in the way.

See my suggestions here: http://yachtmarine.com/httpdocs/OPENCPNMAP.jpg

I like manimauls grey shadow backgrounds in the menu and chart selection bars, looks very pro. Perhaps he can also make a proper chart icon?

Manimaul...

I'm still not COMPLETELY happy with the boat icon finish. It looks like it's sailing with the keel up and a big hole in the bottom. I would make the colour inside the boat fairly plain and instead of the white hole, put a thin white cross hair in the middle. Hope you don't mind...

Sounds perfect, just like how most of my boat trips end up...

Sinbad, are you on Vista64 or Vista32? I am on V32 and cannot recreate this problem. The alternative is I have no cm63's loaded, only ENC.

Cleaned up the concept interface again, I think this is a bit more refined.

http://matrixmariner.com/sites/defau...Iexample2b.png

Proposal Includes:

Proposed gps status lights to bar.

Proposed console button.

that launches console in it's own nested window

or when there is no active route -->

Changes list:
  • removed status bar
  • mouse hover on chart gives cursor position, distance and bearing from ship after 2-3 second hover
  • optional (toggle on/off with button) console that shows COG, SOG, etc
  • current chart selection gets bold outline to clearify it's selection

  • mouse hover over current selected chart box frees up menu bar space for gps status and console button
  • arrow pointing north in bottom right corner for charts that are not north up and/or for future course up ... head up options
