I further recall that my friend was also permanently connected to his own AIS network via 3G mobile connection. That could also have been the cause of the double target.

Come to think of it.. wouldn't it be neat to target a ship and set automatic tracking so that it always remained in the centre of the chart and moving the charts as it sailed. I am thinking about the boring winter months ashore and for the armchair sailors. A sort of virtual voyage.

Hi,

I'm doing this in my boat with a CTRX transponder, serial-to-ethernet
adaptor, and a 3G gateway/router. It works very well, consumes
relatively low power and is very stable.

Forget about all these USB dongles, they don't work standalone. Also you
don't want a PC running as a gateway, too much power and too unreliable.

I'm using a CDMA450 network with a Huawei Gateway, but you need to find
a similar box for the network you want to use. If it's UMTS, I would go
for the Ericsson W21.

Ericsson W21 3G Router, 3G Router, EDGE, UMTS Router, 3G, Gateway, HSDPA

You also need a serial-to-ethernet converter. I have good experience
from both NetCom and Digi.

Now that Swordfish has switched off his nav systems for the night,MY ship now defaults to Georgetown,Carolina, the home of OpenCPN. Tomorrow when Swordfish starts to move,MY ship will again move to Sweden.. Ah.. well...

Those look really great!!

Any thoughts from anyone on icons for the different chart types and scales so that there's a bit more info in there than just a colored rectangle?

The OpenCPN icons look great,BUT,wouldn't it be an idea to make them smaller to allow for additional icons for future features? Looking very professional... Thanks....

Since manimaul scaled them down to the same size as Dave's originals, and judging by the text size on the rest of the screen, I think the map info missing is actually because they are using a much smaller screen size or the screen was not maximized when they scraped it.

Dacust is exatly right. The screenshot is on my mini9 netbook, so the window is extremely small.

On another note, some AIS produce a VDO sentence for own ship data. Perhaps, VDO from Swordfish, for one reason or another isn't being filtered out
of your AIS data stream. Although, I'm not sure if Opencpn will read a VDO sentence.

BTW, it would be nice if the default start location would be the last known gps position. This would make planning easier for those not on the East coast. When you turn on your laptop without a gps now you have to painfully scale out and scroll scroll scroll. If someone knows a manual method of entering in start position, that would be good too.

Swordfish is transmitting data on two different systems. One is regular AIS uploaded to their own network acessable over the internet, the other is GPS based uploading their position via 3G mobile to their network etc etc. 3G being local often updates the position more rapidly than AIS via Siitech's servers in Vancouver. Swordfish is now back at her moorings at the end of her vacation cruise.

Wherever you have access to wireless internet,you could use Siitech's FREE AIS browser as a 'Virtual AIS receiver' in the areas covered by their 24/7, real-time AIS network.

Siitech:

You could also set up your own AIS receiving station on land in your area and feed your data to aishub.net. In return,you will have access to their RAW AIS data you can feed into your OpenCPN program. This is what I am doing,in addittion to having the privilege to use a few other raw data feeds as a marine consultant for network updating etc. It is also possible to join Siitech's network in the same way for even greater coverage.

I have changed all the autorisations to 777 for :

It is the same, it doesn't work.

But I try to install Opencpn with opencpn-1.3.2.tar.bz2 instead with opencpn_1.3.2_i386.deb and I have seen in the "Readme" file that :
"It is sufficient for all other directories in /usr/share/opencpn to have permissions 0755, i.e. exec/searchable and readable by all."

I don't have any Opencpn directory in /usr/share/, all the directories and files are in /usr/local/share/opencpn/ so I gave the permission 777 to the Openpcn directory and to all the directories and files within.

It was working and so I set the charts folder. But :
* I have no depth on the CM93 charts
* when I try to go in the "Tools", whatever I do, it freeze again and I have to kill the process
So I can use it as long as I don't open the "Tools", but I cannot set the GPS, neither the others options.
