Open CPN not talking to Digital Yacht AIS and GPS - Please help!

Hi there,

I have a new macbook pro, alongside a Digital Yacht AIS100PRO and Digital Yacht GPS150. I've installed the latest version of Open CPN-3.2.2

The problem I'm having is neither the GPS or AIS is being recognised by Open CPN.

I have both units wired onto a fully charged 12v battery. The AIS has it's green LED on.

I have the green and yellow NMEA 'outs' of the GPS connected to the green and yellow NMEA 'ins' of the AIS respectively, i.e.; yellow to yellow, green to green.

I've installed one Digital Yacht driver from their CD-'USB driver for AIS units'.

I've installed the device within Open CPN's settings and applied the changes.

But the little dot in the top right hand corner of Open CPN is still red. I believe it should be green when the GPS and AIS is talking to it.

I'm sure it's very simple when you know how!
Any advice will be much appreciated.

Some condiderations:

- At settings (the wrench), which COM ports do you have defined in the Connections tab? (btw.: the manual at "?" is very helpful...)

- No other process/program but OpenCPN can be working with a COM port at the same time. So if you have the settings program for the devices running at the same time, disconnect the port there and close it.

- are the baud rates correct? 4800 for plain GPS and 38400 for AIS.
Double check with the handbook of the devices please

If this doesn't help, please post a screenshot of your connection tab and if possible tell us with which virtual COM ports the devices are working.

Thanks, Baud rate fixed it.
Just need to get some charts for Australia and take it for a spin now.

Charts for Australia are not officially available in a format that OpenCPN can use. However, there are CM93 charts, dated 2011, which will work with OpenCPN available for download (~1GByte), but you will have to look yourself for these as in Australia they are considered illegal as they have not be obtained from an official supplier.

Just completing a 3 month east coast cruise using OpenCPN (and Digital Yacht AIS) instead of Nobletec which we have used for the last few years. There are still a few things that need adding to OpenCPN to make it easier for us, but it has worked very well and has proved to be easy to use once over the small learning curve. The only real downside is the lack of official charts for Australia that OpenCPN can use.

Thanks for the tip on the charts. Do they have to be expanded once downloaded in the RAR format?

I've been trying to add another GPS usb dongle, when I click 'add device' within settings it just refreshes the same page. No extra window to add and configure a new device. Any ideas on that one?

Thanks in advance.

TambourineMan...
Of course you have to extract the archive with the charts on your drive and add the location where you did so on the charts settings tab.
On the connections tab, after clicking on add, fill in what's needed for your new connection and click on Apply,.
