Phil,
as seen in your screenshot of Device Manager you have still the wrong Prolific driver version running.
Please do as I told you: Read carefully the instructions and follow them step by step: Family Software Drag Racing - Newsletter#37, Prolific PL-2303 Driver Solution for Code 10
Important for you to know which Windows version you have, 32-bit or 64-bit?
The exe files and procedures are different!!!
Once done you can check again with Device Manager which Prolific version is loaded.
It must be 3.3.2.102 for 64-bit or version 2.0.2.8 for 32-bit.

Don't hesitate to ask if you still have questions and not understand what to do.

Gerhard

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

Hi Gerhard I have read the document completely several times and spent the last 48 hours installing/installing the bit 32 download without success from download to signing terms agreement connected/unconnected and reinstalled BU353 but still cannot get rid of the delinquent driver and install 2.0.2.8.
Would it be possible to communicate with you via email and give you a blow by blow account of what I am doing in an endeavour to solve this problem without clogging the cruisers form up.
If so I am philndos@xtra.co.nz

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

Phil,

the MS Process Explorer should work as described in order to follow the issue.
If not there is something seriously wrong.
Do you have perhaps some computer savvy nearby to have a look?
4 eyes do see often much faster what is going on...

Would you please tell us first which Windows version you have, 32-bit or 64-bit? That is because when you have 64-bit the installer for 32-bit does not work.
Go to the Windows Start button and choose Settings / System.
The picture is from a german Windows, but hopefully you will understand.

This suggests to me that you don't need to waste your time playing with drivers. You've posted two screen shots showing the GPS connected to your computer. One was with GPSInfo active (as well as OpenCPN) and there was a good connection to GPSInfo. The other was with OpenCPN active, no GPSInfo running, and the connection was good to OpenCPN. Do you have any examples you can show us where OpenCPN is running, GPSInfo is not running, and you can't get a connection?

Where does Phil23 live? Perhaps he is close to a knowledgeable OpenCPN user who can help? That might be much easier for everybody.

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

we run open cpn 4.0.0 on a Panasonic cf30 with built in gps
we have had problems with gps recognition after upgrading to windows 10
temporary fix was to use a usb gps worked beautifully till someone wrote a driver
to run the internal gps in win 10

after reading your posts there may not be a spare port /do you have the back up discs to uninstall all programs using gps then re install open cpn and gps

on open cpn 4.0.0 running win 10
click on the spanner
click on add connection
click on data port
the drop on data port should list the available ports
that indicate an nmea signal
you may need to try each one re start open cpn each time
if you know the gps port number and it is in that list try that one first

win 10 still has a device manager
it is in computer management same as most windows systems
click on ports (COM & LPT) it should show you the port the gps is using without a small yellow flag

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

I have a thought. Is the puck set in a different mode? I used to have to set my puck into one mode to connect it to my computer via USB and then using an earlier version of GPSinfo or a Sirf program set it to serial mode, then remove an usb adapter cable and plug it into my vhf to get position data.
The second year I forgot to do that and it did not work. The third year I did it properly and have left it in that mode since connected to the vhf.
If I were to take the BU puck and try to connect to my pc thru the usb adapter cable, position data would not be available until I teset the puck into another mode.
I have not done this for several years because i now have a dedicated vhf and pc pucks.

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

phil23 Opua Bay is a beautiful place. If I were there I would not worry about this stuff.

I wonder if Matt Paulin [Neptune's Gear] in Auckland Area would know someone in that area who is using OpenCPN and could help?

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

Phil,
A good download should be fine, as long as it is "clean"

Is your Globalstar with a USB connector? Are you sure that at no time did you set it into some other "serial" mode to connect to a VHF, with a Sirfstar program?

Just to check, you are using Win10 as I understand? And you are using BU-343-S4?

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

OK so whats the forums reaction to this:

I have been advised my a large Marine Electronics company here that they have no end of problem with Windows 10 in marine equipment and also satphones, some times they have success but mainly failures related to Windows 10 and drivers their advise to me;

Get rid of 10 and reinstall 7 or 8 preferably 8

What comment???????
