Open CPN 5 does not "see" my GPS

I never had any problem with 4.8 hooking right up to my BU-353S4 USB GPS Receiver.

Version 5 refuses to connect up. I followed all the instructions in the manual and still no joy.

Is is possible to go back to 4.8? It worked great, 5 seems to glitchy.

Your operating system? Your connection settings? Your logfile? Please.

Yes, it is possible to go back to 4.8, but we really are interested in is fixing problems in 5, if any exist, so be so kind and help us to do it before we help you to downgrade and come back after next release again with exactly the same unfixed problem...

Re: Open CPN 5 does not "see" my GPS

I am running Windows 10 Pro.

Connection settings: SERIAL, INPUT, NMEA O183, BAUD RATE 4800, PRIORITY 1

Okay, this system will not allow me to upload my log file. It says the file is too large.

I had to change the name from .LOG to .TXT to get the system to look at it. When it was .LOG the system says it is an invalid file type.

I can email it to you .

I think it will take the log file as a pdf.opencpnlogfile.pdf

From your log
Quote:
5:36:24 PM: Garmin GPS could not be initialized on port: Serial:COM4 Error Code is -56
LastGarminError is:
It seems that you have ticked one or more of the Garmin options. No reason to do that for a BU-353S4.
Uncheck those option(s), check that you're using the correct serial port and try again.

This is what a working USB GPS puck COM port configuration looks like. Is your different than this (except for the COM port #)?

Re: Open CPN 5 does not "see" my GPS

It appears to be working now. I started OpenCPN with the puck plugged in and showing power.

OpenCPN now sees the GPS.

I am wondering if it has something to with the fact that in the past I would start the GPS using GPSinfo program?

Today I did not start that program first as I have always done in the past.

With Version 4.8 I would always start the GPS with GPSInfo then start OpenCPN and everything was fine.

It seems like Version 5 does not like GPSInfo.

Does this sound right?

TIA

No, it doesn't sound right.

From the start you should have explained GPS data is used by other processes. It just wastes everyone's time trying to sort out your problems not caused by OpenCPN.

To underline it : A COM port or serial connection can only be used by one party at the same time.

Repeated 100+ times here.

And now write down 20 times: "OCPN 5.0 is not crap"

Happy sailing!
