See the revised version (do not remove the .doc
I'd also like to hear from Thomas about the script credit, I'm not sure he'd like to be credited as Thomas “Cagney” Beeblebrox.

If no-one has any problems with it, I'd put in in the opencpn.org wiki.

Steps 1 and 2:
Say you have a chart in jpeg format called chart.jpg.
From the command line, use:
convert chart.jpg -colors 127 chart.gif
and then again,
convert chart.jpg -colors 127 chart.tif
I think there is a small error, it should likelly be:

The idea is as Dan mentioned to create an intermediate palette enforced gif and then convert the palette-gif to a palette-tif.

The "127" is the number of individual colors used. Sometimes it pays of to reduce this number to get a smaller file size, say, if you start with a bitmaped format like png that contains fewer colors.

Very true. It's a serious error, as if someone followed the procedure as I put, it wouldn't work. Bad mistake.

I'll also add a note on the colors, saving space is always good.

Thanks

Be silly Don, keep my name. I can always change it in the Wiki anyway.

Right. So I put it there. It got a bit mauled in the conversion, but looks readable anyway. I can't find it, but I guess it has to be approved or something.

I see the chart conversion thingy is now here. Nice.

Armed with my own cilly instructions, I'm now trying to get my over 9000 charts in some sort of order.

I have two questions:
1) Does anyone know of something like a "kap browser", something that will let me thumbnail the charts already in .kap format so I can see approximately what they are without opening them one by one? I looked around a bit, with not much luck.

2) It's a feature request and in the wrong place I guess, but then...
Wouldn't it be nice if OpenCPN, when it loads the chart database, could produce a simple text file with something like:
found: /home/user/charts/nicechartofniceplace.kap loaded ok
found: /home/user/charts/chartofsomeplace.kap unrecognized format - not loaded
found: /home/user/charts/chartofotherplace.kap header is foobar - not loaded
found: /home/user/charts/chartofotherplace.jpg try converting to kap - not loaded
found: /home/user/charts/pictureofmykids.jpg don't be silly - not not a chart

etc.?
Some sort of chartload.log.
It would be very useful to know which of your over 9000 charts are actually used and which are just taking up space on the disk.

OK, this is messy, but if you got time and disk space, use bsb2tif and then just use your favorite image organizer.

Hi,

I sometimes use PolarView Polar Navy

It is fast to add directory of BSBs, select a chart, see it.

Ciao, Marco.

Dan, yes, I could do that it batch mode, take a walk, come back and browse.
It could be just the thing to do at some point.

Marco, cool, I can use it. It gives you the chart properties in the list too, which is good (filename, lattitude (sic) longitude, scale, chart name, which is useful, format (bsb, etc.) and "status", whatever that is because it's blank.

Annoying annoying: it would not see the kap files I just made because they were not called .KAP in capitals, I would have to change all of them, but luckily I need it to browse the ones I haven't converted, and the seem to all use capitals.

Even more annoying: it mixes up all the directories and won't let you remove them, except chart by chart with confirmation window, so for the purpose of browsing over 9000 charts... I'll try renaming the directories back and forth.
Anyway, it's something I can use, thanks.

Thanks Sinbad. I'm afraid it crashes big time* with Wine, but I'm sure Windows users here can use it.

As a guess I would say that Polar View is probably better (for what I need), for all the annoying bits, but I'll have to test it better.
I had seen it before (PV) because I often click on the ads here just to support the forum but hadn't realized the potential as a browsing tool.

* When I say big time... my keyboard went from Spanish to US, luckily it was easy to reset.

I agree it is not "perfect"...

To remove a set of charts, select them all (use ctrl + mouse click or shift + mouse click). Then remove. (I use Windows.)

I've not understand very well how it add charts from a directory. For example it seems to add only charts which name ends in _1.KAP _2.kap, ... Anyway you can always add a single individual chart by add cell instead of add directory

Ciao, Marco.

Edit on Polar Navy: yes you can delete all charts at once, by selecting them all with Shift and/or Ctrl, so it's turning out to be very useful indeed.

Edit 2: Ah, hadn't seen Marco's post.
In Linux it sees .KAPs but not .kaps. Very likely because Linux is case-sensitive and Windows is not.

If those guys had half the betatesters we've got...
(they probably wouldn't write "Lattitude" to start with :-) )

- D.

P.S. Marco, grazie, ci sto prendendo la mano, e' davvero veloce e mi viene assai utile.

Ref my #86...

This .kap/.bsb browser is discontinued and only works for Win XP.. but is very handy. You can also use Photoshop to read/convert .bsb files to bitmaps.
