Re: Offer of Salty Southeast Cruisers Net Data to OpenCPN users

David (wdkester),

Going back to your original posting it looks like we do not have to worry about DRM with the Salty Southeast data. If this is correct could you make a sample spreadsheet with just a couple of lines of data per page and I could look at making the layer(s) and/or a plugin (Windows/Linux) to make the layer file(s). I may need some help with tidying up the code!!!

I will PM you my email address.

Regards,
Mike

Re: Offer of Salty Southeast Cruisers Net Data to OpenCPN users

Stay tuned!

The data is currently being formatted in a more friendly way. The reformatting should be finished by the end of summer. When the Anchorages (or maybe Trouble Areas) data is done I'll get a tab delimited text file and go from there.

Things that need deciding eventually(jump in here and add your own ideas)
1. where to host the data (OpenCpn layer library)
2. how often to update lib (monthly if process is manual, weekly if it can be automated)
3. will a PI need to be involved? If so we need a programmer.
4. will probably will need someone to write conversion scripts.
5. which data to include? e.g. Bridge data contains an JPEG image of the bridge(my inclination is to only to have a name, icon, lat/long, and desc field for phase 1)

Comments?

Depends on the size, just the data should be pretty small. Pictures will be way bigger.

Seems reasonable

If it will be set of layers, not necessarily. But yes, it would be convenient - Let's see when the dataset gets available. If I had to write a plugin, I would probably take a pretty general approach and not do it just because of this particular set.

Conversion from TAB delimited text to GPX should be a trivial task, just drop me a note when you have some sample data.

I would probably start with just linking the pictures from the web, especially if it will be a layer library - Links to local files are not really portable.

David,

Pavel would write far better stuff than me, but if you need an extra pair of hands for a plugin to generate the layers I would be happy to help.

Re: Offer of Salty Southeast Cruisers Net Data to OpenCPN users

I think I may have found the solution to the database we need to share tracks and cruising information between users. I read this post, it seems interesting and could apply to an opencpn plugin.

https://plus.google.com/+LinusTorval...ts/X2XVf9Q7MfV
This means we just use git hosting, but it also allows users to merge their databases in anchorges away from internet access.
