OCPN Radar Cabeling Questions

When setting up for a Garmin Fanton 24 to OCPN through the GXradar plugin I have a question about the cables required.
I know Garmin uses proprietary Crossover RJ45 cables so when setting up an Interface Type1 system - so the cables from the radar and the back of the Chartplotter will have Crossover Cables plugged into each Amphenol MRJ-5780-01 ... but

What type of cables are used from the "back sides" of the Amp MRJ connectors to the Network switch and from the network Switch to the computer? Straight through standard RJ45 or do these need to be Crossovers as well. I don't think so but don't want to fry anything if I'm wrong.

I suppose the reason that the 12v power has to be switched to both Amp MRJ's pin 5 is that the Network switch will not pass it through - Right.

Thanks

Re: OCPN Radar Cabeling Questions

Trying to make it easier to see what I am asking. Please look at the diagram modified from the OpenCPN website's docs and tell me if I have it correctly planned for the cabeling. The Docs do't make any reference to the wiring specifics.

Re: OCPN Radar Cabeling Questions

Squander....
I don't know the specifics about the Garmin crossover cabling setup.
But assuming the "factory" installation requires one proprietary cable from the MFD to the scanner, and it is a crossover cable, then:
1. You should have only one crossover cable in your OCPN installation.
2. Probably sensible to make it the lower right cable in your drawing, probably the longest cable that came with the scanner.
3. The other cables may all be straights.
4. You can test this by connecting everything (without the Pin-5 switch installed), and prove that the MFD can see and control the scanner through the hub without OCPN involvement at all.

Make sense?

Re: OCPN Radar Cabeling Questions

Thanks. Looks like you mean that the one plugging into the Chartplotter just needs to be a straight thru all the way instead of the modified cable shown in my diagram.

Thanks I'll try the setup this weekend.

Re: OCPN Radar Cabeling Questions

@ Squanderbucks
If you can write up a brief paragraph describing what you found worked, and modify your graphic, I will post it in the wiki for Garmin Fanton 24
There have been previous questions about this and your graphic is helpful.

Thanks.
