OCPN 4.4.0 Not accepting official .kap/bsb maps

I have the official KAP/BSB maps of Norway.

The file names contain an underscore ( _ ) which is no longer accepted
by my OCPN v. 4.4.0 like this NW006_2.KAP

Changing the underscore to a full stop ( . ) fixes the problem.

The only thing is, I have SO many maps and hate to do the change manually.

Can that be fixed in the next version?

I'm using charts with names of the type you describe every day, without any problems. Please check what your opencpn log file says.

The problem seems to be that the Norwegian official charts are supplied in different geo. formats, ´Polyconic´ which works ok, and ´Equidist Cylindrical´ which does not. Both formats are read by both Fugawi and SeaClear II.

Can this be fixed in the next version?

Looking at your two posts, I have difficulties following you.
Let's get some facts. Exactly which Norwegian charts are you talking about.
Chart numbers please! Or even better the actual files.

Hi Thomas.. My first assumption was wrong, the _ has nothing to do with it.

The problem is,the Norwegian ´Kystverket´official charts seem to use several different formats,one of which is the Equidist Cylindr

This chart format,to be exact chart nr. NW007.1.kap is Equidist Cylindr. and cannot be read by OpenCPN.

Morning Thomas and Philippe

The chart is an official chart not available from link except by purchase.
I sent a copy to Thomas yesterday,just remove the .jpg on both files.

It works fine on all other navigation progs,but not on OCPN.
According to the map description attached,it is in ´Cylindical´ format.
Most other charts are in Polyconic format.

I attach a screendump of the chart in question.

You should probably see a message in your logfile, saying the chart is not loaded because it uses an unknown projection. Given we can probably assume that "Gauss conformal" == "Transverse Mercator", all that's needed is to add the projection around https://github.com/OpenCPN/OpenCPN/b...timg.cpp#L1060
I would still need to see the chart (actually just it's header) or your logfile to be able to do it though as we need to know what exact value it has set for PR header.

But,you can produce the same chart here in .kap format using Paul´s GE2KAP

There is an amazing number of possibilities if you look at all the chart formats at the bottom left of the page,even complete ENC´s and very detailed aerial photos you can overlay the maps.

All the maps are for some reason skewed 6º but the map area selector can also be moved around 360º to adjust. You can select map areas in A4, A2 and A3 formats. Only thing is,the final chart looks a little dull,not quit in focus.

This will not help us to fix the problem (Which is also probably resolved in newer editions of the chart as we can see on the picture Thomas posted), we need the info from your particular charts that are not displayed.
Unless I misunderstood you and the charts you are complaining about were not bought, but produced from the site you linked.

NO, this chart is original... year 2000 I think...

The thing is,Norway has a lot of charts to cover the enormous coastline,considering all the ´fjords´ and there will obviously be others,also in Cylindrical format.

I think a lot of us are using older charts,needing manual updating.

Aha! Now I understand.
It is not the question of "Equidist Cylindr" projection, which made no sense at all to me. Such a chart would be unusual and useless for navigation.

It's a "Gauss Conformal Cylindrical projection" according to the pic you attached. That is another name for "Transverse Mercator". Note that it says exactly that on the picture I attached earlier, which comes from an up to date edition of chart 7.
Obviously your charts are based on an earlier edition.

OpenCPN has no problems handling Transverse Mercator charts. I think that the problem lies in the .kap text header.
It should look like this:

PR=TRANSVERSE MERCATOR

but says something else. Hence OpenCPN does not recognize it.
That should be an easy fix.
For testing, just edit the header in a text or binary editor, and run "bsbfix" afterwards.
