O5 keeps exiting

Windows 10 laptop
OpenCPN version 5 (latest build 1. 0.14402, plus 5.0 +f51649f).

Nmea inputs via USB to serial adapters from GPS Puck and Digital Yacht AIS. I do have issues (conflicts) with trying to prioritise these inputs, but that has been ongoing for some months and presumably unrelated.

While apparently operating normally, O5 just quits. No dialog box or error message. Happened several times during a 6 hour trip. After it happened a few times, I downloaded and installed latest version.

I went to event log in admin tools, and copied the error message, which doesn't seem to contain much info. Is there any other log file created during a crash?
I tried to attach the log file (.txt) but apparently that format is not allowed!

Re: O5 keeps exiting

C:\ProgramData\Opencpn is the default.
"show system and hidden folders" shall be activated.

Easier is to access from the help/about button of OpenCPN (the "?" from the tool bar).

Re: O5 keeps exiting

I have found it!
But the date stamp appears to say 31 May, and we are already 2 June over here. So I don't know if it contains latest data...

Then I tried to attach it. But it is 1mb in size and I can only attach files 400kb...
Can I email it?

Re: O5 keeps exiting

Zip the file the rename it opencpn.pdf.

To zip from Windows Explorer right click on the file name and select option to compress the file.

There are two dates on Windows files, creation date and modified date.

This file has modified date of today (approx 1.5 hours ago when last crash occurred) opencpn_log.pdf

Re: O5 keeps exiting

I *think* that I have worked out that O5 exits when it is receiving AIS data from the Nmea stream through a USB to serial adapter. If the data is received via the USB plug on the AIS (Digital Yacht 3000) then it works fine.
Given the recent discussions on blowing electronics by using USB ports, I would prefer not to use this comms method...

Re: O5 keeps exiting

I am now fairly confident that it is only the Nmea connection between the AIT3000 AIS unit and the Com port via a CH340 USB to serial adapter, that causes O5 to exit frequently (sometimes in as little as a couple of minutes, other times after an hour or so).

I have tried to ignore all the ownship position sentences in the Nmea connection, but some still seem to slip through the filter occasionally.

Interestingly, when I use the USB connection from the AIS, O5 does not exit, but I don't always get updated position reports from AIS targets. Sometimes it will be 3 or 4 or 8 minutes for an update to be received and processed, even though an Android tablet running OpenCPN connected via WiFi to the AIS receives and processes data from targets every 30 seconds or less. So the AIS unit is transmitted correct data.

And then there is the conflict of updating ownship position reports, between the different inputs (aerial Puck, AIS nmea data, AIS USB data). I am trying to work out the best priority order. But that is (I think) a whole 'nother issue...

Would it help if I changed the Nmea data com port baud rate? If so, should it be faster to enable all the data to get through, or slower to allow more complete processing of data received? Currently the baud rate is 38400

Re: O5 keeps exiting

There is one interesting thing in the log file:

10:09:26 AM: Changing NMEA Datasource for 0x1CA0x1C11 to Serial:COM7 (Priority: 2)

This happens some time before the crash. There may be no correlation but it seems weird to see an unprintable character in an NMEA sender type.

The attachment didn't work for some reason. I am not sure how a screenshot will show anything better than the log file.

The standard things to do are:

1) Turn off OpenGL if it is on. Does that solve the problem?

2) Disable all plugins. Even osENC for now to be sure that isn't the problem. Let O use the background coastline.

3) Test for some time to be sure it isn't going to crash. Then enable the 4 standard plugins (Chart downloader, WMM, Grib, Dashboard) and test again for long enough to be sure those plugins are not the issue.

4) Keep adding other plugins one at a time to see if one or another plugin triggers the fault.

Keep in mind, many plugins get all NMEA messages. So when you have lots of NMEA messages coming in from multiple ports it can really ratchet up the messaging traffic between O and the plugins. It's possible some plugin cannot handle the flood of messages even though it doesn't use those messages. It still has to check whether it wants the message or not. LogbookKonni would be a suspect to try last. It subscribes to NMEA messages but uses only a relatively few of them.

Re: O5 keeps exiting

In addition to what TransmitterDan suggested, sometimes this helps, perhaps renaming the opencpn.ini to opencpn.ini.old and then starting Opencpn to make a new default version of opencpn.ini will help. Then you will have to create your settings again. If after testing the problem remains, you can easily go back to the old version.
