NV-charts file extension...

I sent the following to NV in Europe after being given their e-mail address and haven't heard back. Does anyone have an answer for my question to them?

Thanks,

Sum

===========================
my e-mail to them:

Quote:
We were given your e-mail address by your USA office and
they said to e-mail you about the following:

We use the navigation software OpenCPN on our two boats for
navigation on the ship's computer. There is a plug-in
available for it that makes it compatible with some of your
charts.

Here is a quote about the plug-n...

"nv-charts Plugin v1.3, released 2012-03-29
Provides OpenCPN support for nv-charts (.EAP extension).
Supported charts must have been correctly installed with
valid encryption certificates in place.

We are interested in buying a number of your charts if they
will work with OpenCPN.

The question is do your newest charts have the .EAP
extension on the file names?

Also do you know if your newest charts will or will not
work with OpenCPN?

Re: NV-charts file extension...

Hello,

I have this kind of chart. there is no problem with OpenCPN 3.0.2.

There is a problem with the bêta OpenCPN 3.1.915 (crash). It seem that there is no poroblem with OpenCPN 3.1.919

But I have buy these charts in 2011. So i have read today the web sit of NV Verlag and I do not see that change the type of chart.

see here :

http://www.nv-verlag.de/new_eng/nv_l...r_digital.html

Best regards

Gilletarom.

Thank you. I still haven't heard back from them.

Here is what concerned me and is from their web site...

Since 2008, we are shipping our digital NV. Charts in nv.digital file format. It incorporates a new encryption system.
Since you bought your charts in 2011 the new encryption system must be ok.

Can you see if the file extension is .EAP like what is needed for the plugin to work...

I am assuming that you are using that plugin.

The charts have been available in different raster formats over the last ten years, starting as BSB ver. 3.0 to BSB ver. 4.0 and are now being standardized as nv.digital (non-BSB).
Quote from nv-charts US site.

From this quote and everything else I have read, nv has gone from using the .kap and .cap file extensions to their own proprietary .eap extension.
I would be very surprised if there existed another nv-chart file extension, apart from .eap.

Thanks I'd hate to buy them and then find out that they didn't work. I'm interested at this point in the 3 that cover....

..::NV-Charts.com::..

...the Bahamas for $149. We would also have the Explorer paper charts with us and like to get in anchorages well ahead of dark.

Appreciate any other comments on the above charts from anyone who has used them,

Sum

Re: NV-charts file extension...

Hi Mr. Sumner, I am a member of nv-charts in Europe/ Germany and your email reached me, but it seems that your email account is blocking my adress, so I am going to answer you this way. What Gilletarom says is right, we have developed an own encryption called nv-digital, based on BSB4, but this encryption is actually mostly used in our european chart regions, in the US, Bahamas and Carribbean it still is BSB3. Nethertheless our charts all work fine with Open CPN, but I would suggest to install the nv-digital plugin for Open CPN, they can be found here:
Plugins | OpenCPN.de
After installing the plugin you shouldn´t have any problems with any of our digital charts from edition 2009 to today.

Best regards,

Carsten

Re: NV-charts file extension...

hello,

Just a detail. NV-Plugin is Ok with OpenCPN 3.0.2. There is a bug with 3.1.919 but Dave as said that this bug will be corrected at the next bêta.

Thanks for getting back to me/us . Not sure what the problem is with the e-mail account, but the above information is what I need to know and you just sold a set of charts for the Bahamas. It will be a Christmas present to ourselves.

Danka,

Sumner and Ruth

Re: NV-charts file extension...

I've been searching and searching for help on using NV charts with Opencpn and this thread is the closest I've come but doesn't answer my questions.

I've used Opencpn in the past and am restarting and trying to work out details. I purchased the Nv chartbooks for the Caribbean and with them come the digital charts. I can't figure out, from the NV website, how to simply download the charts and activate them. I have the activation codes from an email from NV. I downloaded and tried running the NV app. It works and I downloaded one of the chartkits into it and can sort of use it. But, I can't find any .eap files to link to Opencpn. I have the chart downloader and the NV plugins. In my ProgramData directory there is an NV folder, in which there are some .navipack files. I tried linking to these with no success.

My basic question is: does anyone know how to download NV chart files and authorize them (with a legal passcode) and then use them in Opencpn. The NV chartpacks were purchased this year so they are the new ones.

Thanks
Bill

Re: NV-charts file extension...

Bill_E

If the file extension is not ".eap", what is it.
There is a fair chance that it's actually ".kap", in which case OpenCPN can use the without the plugin. Do yo see any files with ".kap2"extension ?

Re: NV-charts file extension...

Do we have any volunteers who know NV Charts use and installation, who would be willing to write a short User Manual documentation for the plugin with just a few screneshots?
