no VMG, HDG, COG on Dashboard (plus other issues)

I am using version 5.0 on my windows 10 and raspberry Pi:

When I set up a route I get the panel on the right that shows ETA etc. Is there a way to change the size and colors of the fonts so that I can see it from across the cockpit?

Likewise the option (in User Interface) to change the font size for the status bar does not seem to have any effect.

Also the route panel calculates the ETA using the local CPU, not the GPS time. Since the cpu clock on my raspberry is not updated from the GPS (don't know how to do that) it is completely wrong, and so the ETA is also wrong. Shouldn't this operate off the GPS?

On the Dashboard plugin:

When I change any settings (eg add COG to the display) the size of the dashboard display gets reset, so then I have to go and manually change it again. Should it not either remember the settings it had or, at the very least, resize itself big enough to be able to display the large fonts that I have selected?

On Windows 10
the dashboard display is not displaying VMG (even though the route panel is), Mag COG, or True HDG and also the HDG predictor arrow on own ship is not being displayed.

On Raspberry
the dashboard display is not displaying VMG but does show the mag COG and True HDG. Also the clock (which is set to show local GPS time) seems to flash back and forth between showing the GPS time and the CPU time which, on my RPI, is completely wrong.

When I have the AIS on, the dashboard seems to lose the SOG and COG every few seconds. I am guessing that maybe there is too much data coming from the AIS. Not sure what I can do about that? I don't really want to filter the AIS data out of the multiplex as I might miss something. I did try setting it to calculate SOG and COG from position changes, but that seems to result in big fluctuations in the displayed speed and course. Seems to work better (when it works) if I don't select that option. But since I am using look ahead mode, it does mean the screen keeps moving around whenever the SOG is lost.

The RPI is plugged in to the USB port on my ship modul multiplex. The windows gets the NMEA by bluetooth from the multiplex.

Any suggestions? Have I missed some settings somewhere, or are these bugs/design features? I know I have posted a lot of stuff here, but this is our main navigation, so I would like to have it working well!

May be how you set up your OCPN. See my Win10 shot below while playing your data in VDR. The predictor and the others are there. The WMG is a part of the active route display only and also relevant only there? Yes, that display is not scalable, true.

Noel what the heck are you doing? Don't be lazy, attach as a text file or doc file or if it is too big add .pdf and say so. These long text files just pasted in are best attached!

Yes, I've done that by increasing the size of the "Console" fonts I believe. It is under Options > UI Look in the manual.

@rgleason thank you! Yes, changing the Console Value size did change the size of the route panel. So that is one problem solved!

I pasted the nmea.txt in as I thought that would be easier for people to use than attaching a file. I guess I was wrong. Sorry.

@Hakan I am sorry, I cannot see the predictor line etc on your image - all I see is a boat in Skandinavia somewhere, so that is clearly not my boat. But, as you say, it might well be my set up, but where do I start looking? Back on version 4.8 it was all working fine. All I did was download and install the latest version.

Yes, VMG relates to an active route, which I had. And the VMG shows up on the route panel, but not on the dashboard

Anyone have any thoughts on the clock (GPS vs CPU) and other issues?

If you look again the predictor line is there. But since there was no valid position and SOG in your NMEA data the predictor line is "dimmed" and boat position not updated from "my" position.

Likewise the option (in User Interface) to change the font size for the status bar does not seem to have any effect.

Also the route panel calculates the ETA using the local CPU, not the GPS time. Since the cpu clock on my raspberry is not updated from the GPS (don't know how to do that) it is completely wrong, and so the ETA is also wrong. Shouldn't this operate off the GPS?

the dashboard display is not displaying VMG (even though the route panel is), Mag COG, or True HDG and also the HDG predictor arrow on own ship is not being displayed.

On Raspberry
the dashboard display is not displaying VMG but does show the mag COG and True HDG. Also the clock (which is set to show local GPS time) seems to flash back and forth between showing the GPS time and the CPU time which, on my RPI, is completely wrong.

When I have the AIS on, the dashboard seems to lose the SOG and COG every few seconds. I am guessing that maybe there is too much data coming from the AIS. Not sure what I can do about that? I don't really want to filter the AIS data out of the multiplex as I might miss something. I did try setting it to calculate SOG and COG from position changes, but that seems to result in big fluctuations in the displayed speed and course. Seems to work better (when it works) if I don't select that option. But since I am using look ahead mode, it does mean the screen keeps moving around whenever the SOG is lost.

The RPI is plugged in to the USB port on my ship modul multiplex. The windows gets the NMEA by bluetooth from the multiplex.

Any suggestions? Have I missed some settings somewhere, or are these bugs/design features? I know I have posted a lot of stuff here, but this is our main navigation, so I would like to have it working well!

Below I have pasted the output from the VDR on my windows machine. The one on the RPI is a bit harder to access.

You have some issues with your network.


Your ECRMC sentences have a different timestamp to your GPRMC sentences so something is set to the wrong timezone.



Your data as pasted has an odd whitespace character (This is why you should have attached the file rather than doing a copy and paste.). When I remove the ECRMC sentences and the wierd whitespace everything works as it should. See attached screenshots.

@Moo - thanks. I will investigate further and see why we are getting different timestamps. Not sure what is generating the $EC sentences.

So, on the dashboard we have a missing VMG (but it does show on the route panel) and missing Mag COG and True HDG. And my heading predictor arrow is missing.

Also, the GPS time showing on my dashboard is different from that showing on your screenshot - you have 23:41 UTC and I have 12:23 UTC - how can that be if they are coming off the same NMEA sentences? At the time of recording, the 12:23 was correct.

Also you can see that the ETA @VMG is using the computer's CPU clock, not the GPS clock. Since the CPU clock on my RPI is not correct, this is not too useful. Same on this replay, as we are running old data, so the windows 10 clock does not match the GPS time.

I have been through all the setup options again, and can't spot anything else to change. But clearly there must be something that is setup wrong, since it is working on your machine. Any ideas?

The time difference is just that I method of playback that I was using injects the correct time stamps (well it does if I have it set to). If I play back with VDR or using the file timestamps it is correct for your time.



as for VMG. Are you supplying VMG from some other instrument? I can't find the right part in the source code but I think the Dashboard is expecting VMG from an external source.



Have you got a heading line configured? I don't think that it is turned on by default.


The MAG COG and True heading are fine on my setup.

I solved it!

Long story why, but I had the World Magnetic Model plugin disabled and was using a manual variation correction. When I turned the WMM back on, it all worked - course predictor, COG and HDG. So I guess OpenCPN is not working correctly with just a manual variation and is not converting the NMEA sentences into the mag/true sisters.

The VMG, however, still does not display in the dashboard. I guess the dashboard is looking for that to be supplied as a NMEA sentence, whereas the route panel is calculating it from SOG and destination point.

Still the ETA displays as computer time not GPS time. That, I guess, is a 'feature/bug'. Likewise the font on the status bar.

So I think we have fixed as much as we can, and the rest is up to the programmers who may or may not choose to address them.

Where are you looking at "ETA"? I don't have an ETA option in the "Dashboard" (at least that my eyes can see) and it is not in the manual ... Are you referring to TTG on the route display? That is Time To Go not ETA and is the time remaining on the route so not affected by timezones etc..

I guess I spoke too soon about the problems being solved.

Two issues still remain:

1) The time on the Dashboard clock (and the route panel ETA) are BOTH taken from the computer cpu, not from the GPS. The manual says 'GPS clock - Unmodified time provided by the GPS unit, if available. This value is UTC.' which is NOT what I am getting. See the two images where I changed the cpu time and date and, in so doing, changed also the GPS time on the dashboard! If the times were coming from the GPS, then they should remain unchanged no matter what time is on my CPU. I tried to attach a short video but it seems that videos aren't allowed, so I have included a link below showing the dashboard clock behaviour on my raspberry pi. You will see that the cpu clock (top right corner) shows 20:16, but the GPS clock on the dashboard flicks back and forth between 18:14 and 20:16. But it doesn't always do that, sometimes it stays static on the correct GPS time. Very odd.

Note that this is for a route that has only one leg, so they should be the same. See the attached images - how can it take less than an hour to travel 2.62 miles with a VMG of 1.39 kts? Likewise, the ETA @VMG is calculated using that erroneous TTG @VMG and the computer (not GPS) local time.

Do you see the same issues?

Yes, I have looked at the manual for the plugins and I don't see anything in there about the above behaviours, nor about the magnetic variation conversions not happening when a user supplied variation is provided instead of the WMM plugin.

What default speed do you have set for routes? Does changing it change the TTG?


It looks to me as if you are still getting dodgy GPS times coming into OCPN. You are running OpenPlotter; right?


Anyway can you record some data with the VDR plugin and post it here? I think that therein we will find the problem.
