No HDG Data Display In OpenCPN

I installed the opencpn ver.3.1.814,found the HDG data can not be acquired from the AIS input data.

In my boat,I connect the Gyrocompass to AIS, and then connect the AIS and the computer running opencpn with a RS232 9PIN line,the GPS input into opencpn I use shared from Ais,but in the opencpn ,there is no HDG data.Anyone else same situation like this?

one more thing,the opencpn ver3.1.814 enhanced the latitude digits display,but in the dashboard ,the latitude displayed still 3 digits.

re: No HDG Data Display In OpenCPN

xiurong...
Could you show us the NMEA stream that gets to OpenCPN from your AIS, please?

I will change the lat display in the dashboard as well when I will be doing some changes to it next time.

re: No HDG Data Display In OpenCPN

xiurong...
The magnetic heading is taken from HDG, HDM or VHW sentences in the dashboard. None of them is present in your stream, so you get no heading information.

Hi xiurong.

The data you posted, is all AIS data.
There is no other data but AIS.
Your own position can be derived from the sentences that start with !AIVDO.

What brand and type of AIS device are you using ?
Some devices allow to send external data out to connected other devices but will require you to enable that.

Re: No HDG Data Display In OpenCPN

In a parallel to no HDG display if the NMEA HDG data is present it's treated as a magnetic reading and isn't used by the Boat icon for orientation. Instead the COG from the GPS is used. See Chart1.cpp and CHCanvas.cpp for gHdm, pCog, gCog and icon_hdt. This is passed to the Plug-ins and creates havoc with the radar overlays which use pfix.cog to orient the radar images and the boat isn't moving enough to generate a valid COG.

Re: No HDG Data Display In OpenCPN

cowelld....

I'm confused. This works for me. I get HDM from my autopilot, it is converted to gHDT by the WMM PlugIn, (or other source of Var) and it orients the boat properly to true north.

chart.cpp:6801
Code:
    // Here is the one place we try to create gHdt from gHdm and gVar,
    // but only if NMEA HDT sentence is not being received

    if( !g_bHDT_Rx ) {
        if( !wxIsNaN(gVar) && !wxIsNaN(gHdm)) {
            gHdt = gHdm + gVar;
        }
Where exactly are you looking in the code?

Re: No HDG Data Display In OpenCPN

Hello Dave,

I have on NMEA the HDG message and OpenCpn 3.2.0 is not showing the boat heading but just the COG (see attached printscreen), even when the boat is still and COG is completely different from heading.

Is the internal calculation of HDT done only starting from HDM message data?

Thanks,

Stefano

Fastm,
When the boat is still heading and COG will be different. If the boat is stopped and the bow is pointing S 180, but vessel is drifting to say W 270 at .5 kts, then heading is 180 and COG is W 270.

Re: No HDG Data Display In OpenCPN

Hello Capt. Tony,
is clear that heading and cog are different with still boat, but my question is what nmea sentence is used by OCPN to point the boat icon. I have an HDG sentence from the autopilot but the boat icon is always in direction of the cog even if completely different from the heading.
I understood HDM is used from what Dave wrote before, but I wanted to be sure.

Ciao,

Stefano

Re: No HDG Data Display In OpenCPN

fastm...

From looking at the code, HDG should be able to provide correct ships heading. Your HDG sentence is incomplete, and does not contain variation. However, I see that it comes in on the RMC sentence anyway, so that should be OK.

So, why is it not working correctly?

I think we need a complete sample of your NMEA data stream, as recorded by the FDR PlugIn. If you can capture this and post it, we will try to see what is going on here. A few (say 15) seconds should be enough.

Thanks
Dave

Re: No HDG Data Display In OpenCPN

Hi Dave,

here is the NMEA data sample (change the extention to txt).

Looking more carefully I've seen that from time to time the boat icon jumps to the heading value direction, but most of the time remains in the cog direction.
On OCPN I have the wmm plugin activated and that should make the variation available too.

Thanks a lot for the support.

Ciao,

Stefano

Re: No HDG Data Display In OpenCPN

fastm, et al..

Thanks for the NMEA log.

sigh....
Yep, its a bug. HDM and HDG messages do not properly reset the watchdog timeout, so that the heading information is declared stale and unusable after a few seconds. HDT messages, from either compass or AIS transponder input, are processed correctly.

I see no obvious user space workaround. Sorry.

We will probably be releasing a maintenance update to 3.2 within a couple of months. and this goes on the list.

Thanks for your patience

Re: No HDG Data Display In OpenCPN

Hi Dave,

it's no problem for me as it's not a vital function and a fix in 2 months it would be fine.

Thanks a lot for your support and for the great work of all OCPN team.

3.20 STABLE RELEASE MAINTENANCE UPDATES

Dave

As this is the 3.2.0 Stable Release if bugs or errors are found and identified then surely it would be a pre-requisite for updates to be released quickly to ensure that the program is working correctly and non technical users are not put at risk as a result of the bugs.

I fully appreciate these program bugs and errors may not be life threatening BUT this is the main stable release and fixes should be implemented quickly and not 2 or 3 months after its release.

Alternatively you could start a new thread which details and explains what the bugs and errors are in the – 3.2.0 Stable Release -so that users can make their own judgements on whether or not to use the program.
