No Charts or Outlines on Install

When I installed OpenCPN, I followed the instructions to check the "show outlines" box. The instructions show a sample selection of charts I might download, but I am not getting a list OR a master map from which to begin downloading. Ideas? Thanks.

John

Re: No charts or outlines on install

So I reinstalled Opencpn and still no charts to select, no list, no outlines - just a target on Georgetown, SC. The sample list in the instructions is just not there. I need some help over here.

Have you downloaded any charts?

OpenCPN does not come with charts.

Hi,John.
OpenCPN won't download charts from the internet by herself.
Just goto the places she suggests and download some....The NOAA Online Viewer
NOAA's On-Line Chart Viewer
is a place to start.
Then, put these into a folder called Charts,(I guess,eh?) then start the OpenCPN Toolbox, choose Charts tab, browse to that folder,Add Selection and then things should start to happen...
..You need charts installed to see any "Outlines" of 'em.
am I right?is that a help?if not,try again to explain...Sometimes my comprehension burns pretty dim..

Re: No Charts or Outlines on Install

I just installed myself and found this site and downloaded. It worked pretty good.

NOAA RNC's

Also, if you use this site, click the name link, not the view link.

John.alsoOpenCPN loads whole folders of charts- not individual ones...despite the little plus mark beside it that shows the contents.

OK, downloaded a few charts in zip files (as provided by NOAA) and cannot open. Also downloaded the sample PR chart and can't get it to open, either. Not seeing any outlines, let alone charts.

Re: No Charts or Outlines on Install

Awright, I unzipped those RNC's and VOILA! charts all OVER the place! It appears that I have about 7 open at one time, by the line-up at the bottom. Some won't let me zoom out enough to see which state I'm in, and I can't get the crowd to thin any so that I can work with one at a time. My laptop touchpad seems to be exaggerating the situation with it's new-found hypersensitivity.

Suggestions for care-free viewing? Thanks!

Re: No Charts or Outlines on Install

Yeah, it's getting better, using the zoom and change-scale buttons. How do I turn off the charts I don't want to see? It's like the table is cluttered.

Feral Cement...
have a look at
Zoom In & Out | Official OpenCPN Homepage
Scaling Charts | Official OpenCPN Homepage
Chart Quilting | Official OpenCPN Homepage
Status Bar | Official OpenCPN Homepage
The rest of the manual is also worth reading of course, but these chapters are related to your question.

Re: No Charts or Outlines on Install

This thread (and the people on it) is the best I've seen anywhere. I'll do some more reading, then come back and ask more dumb questions that are specifically answered in the FAQ or the instructions or.....

But one time sensitive question before I go - can these charts be loaded onto my Garmin 441? Or is this all computer/laptop based? Alternatives?

Thanks, CF peeps!

Re: No Charts or Outlines on Install

John...
You are stuck with Garmin's proprietary BlueChart charts on your plotter. In this price range more or less the only option to use these charts on board is a computer connected to a GPS (or your boat's NMEA network).

Re: No Charts or Outlines on Install

John,
don't forget the "folder" thing
if you are in wisconsin and don't want to see NewYork charts, separate em into folders and just load wisconsin...

Also, when Quilting is ON,you can remove charts from the quilt temporarily by right-clicking it's doofunny on the chart bar..."remove from quilt"

Zooming:use + and - keyboard keys for zooming too..arrow keys are good for panning around instaed of clickndrag..Keyboard shortcuts are easier than touchpads and mice...

anyways,glad you are catching up.

Re: No Charts or Outlines on Install

Thanks again, guys. I'll check back when stumped again.

BTW, what's the best anchor?

Re: No Charts or Outlines on Install

Are you serious?

Best anchor depends on the sea bed. I've used a lot of different anchors the last 30 years, but prefer my bruce anchor. It always gets a good grip, isn't too heavy, no folding, easy to get up again. But there are newer anchors out there.
