No background chart

I have downloaded the OpenCPN source code and successfully modified it to my needs.

However, from the beginning OpenCPN never showed the background chart.
Where did I go wrong?

You need the gshhs data installed.

I have tried putting the gshhs data in the following places:
./data
./data/gshhs
./gshhs

and also in my chart folder

to no avail
