NMEA sentence for Instrument Panel Barometer?

Hi,

Does anyone have a sample NMEA sentence that works with the Instrument Panel Barometer? I've tried quite a few variants now including these two below and the needle resolutely stays stuck at the bottom.....

$IIXDR, P,1030.1, B, Barometer*34
$OSXDR,P,1030.01,B,Barometer,C,36.8,C,I2CT*47

OSXDR comes from a remote Pi running Openplotter, IIXDR comes from a bit of munging I've done to it with the NmeaConverter plugin.

All help gratefully received,

Thanks,

Aedan

Aedan..
I think you've to find a note in your instrument manual. How is it communicating? What NMEA sentence is it made to receive? Is it NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000 or anything else?

Hi Hakan,
Thanks for the reply, however I suspect I probably didn't explain my question correctly. I know what I can get out of the sensor, it's the OSXDR line in my original post. However the OpenCpn dashboard plugin doesn't seem to understand any form of barometer NMEA 0183 message I try.

My question is: Does anyone have a sample NMEA sentence or trace with barometric pressure in it that OpenCpn will read?

Thanks,

Aedan

Re: NMEA sentence for Instrument Panel Barometer?

Aedan..
I've made some tests:
For OCPN resent code version 4.5 both MDA and XDR works. See pictures
BUT the same instruments in OCPN version 4.4 is not working using the same NMEA sentences.
I used NMEA XDR and MDA like this:
$IIMDA,,,1.015,B,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,*21
Or:
$IIXDR,P,1.011,B,Barometer,*a

So I think you've to update to OCPN version 4.5. Either build yourself from source code or get a binary from anyone here. What's your operating system, Win, LInux, MAC?
OR-- any other opinion - anyone?

Re: NMEA sentence for Instrument Panel Barometer?

Thank you very much Håkan. I am using OpenCpn 4.4 on Windows so your experiments confirm my experiences. If anyone knows where I can get an unofficial 4.5 binary for Windows that would be great.

Thanks for taking the time to do the experiments for me.

Re: NMEA sentence for Instrument Panel Barometer?

Pressure and air temperature now working fine in dashboard_pi with OpenCpn 4.5, receiving data from OpenPlotter over the network. I had to modify the Openplotter code a bit as the pressure was output in mB but the units were B, I just divided the pressure by 1000.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

Aedan,

in OpenPlotter 0.9 - due for the next days - you will have a (no two) dashboard service.

That sounds very good, I look forward to installing it. Will the pressure value be divided by 1000 in the XDR sentence as well? At the moment it's got units of Bar but outputs a mBar value.

Is there an Openplotter forum somewhere that I don't know about?

Thanks,

Aedan

OpenMarine

Also, if you like dashboards then you might enjoy node-red. It's already installed on raspian and looks to be very powerful. I'm using it at the moment for engine temperature gauges, node-red broadcasts a web page so any device can look at it.
Just type node-red in a terminal and it will give you the web address.

Enjoy

Aedan..
The XDR sentanece is presumed to use Bar units as stated in forth part of the sentence: $IIXDR,P,1.011,B,Barometer,*a Here: 1.011, B = Bar.
In Dashboard this value is transformed to view it as 1011 mBar or hPascal.
Your XDR example is not correct saying 1030.1 Bar. That would be a cramped world.

Re: NMEA sentence for Instrument Panel Barometer?

Håkan,

an issue here is that XDR is an "open to vendor" sentence.
So one can go with bars or millibars or hectopascal or non SI scales.
Not defined in NMEA0183 and therefore with every possible implementation.

What we are seeing...
