NMEA messages but ...

Hi,


Having bought a Moitessier HAT and installed OpenPlotter via NOOBS (mostly because I failed miserably to install the Moitessier software on plain Raspbian) ... I kinda sorta maybe have bits of it working ... I was hoping this would be easy.


The HAT software installed OK, I followed the guide, clicked buttons for temp and pressure, the IMU to feed PyPilot etc ... and they all feed SignalK ..


In OpenCPN I have a connection over TCP to the relevant SignalK port and sure enough, in the NMEA debug, I see messages including $APHDM ... but I see no mag heading response on OpenCPN, the compass remains dead, the boat pointing north etc.


If I click on the HAT settings in OpenPlotter and ask for info on the temp/pressure sensor .. it tells me it is -671.48 mbar, -251.20 °C


feeling a little frustrated ...

I have absolutely no experience with the Moitessier HAT, but from your NMEA 0183 sentences, (the $GPGLL, $GPGSV ones) you haven't got any GPS satellites and hence no GPS position.

However one entry

$GPTXT,01,01,02,ANTSTATUS=OPEN*2B<0x0D><0x0A>

kind of suggests that you haven't connected the GPS antenna. That could be the problem ?

I believe these <0x0D><0x0A> are EOL
Those <GREEN> are good. Look up the code in Opencpn.

It looks to me like every sentence has,<0x0D><0x0A> Perhaps it is the eol

-Also now I see that the checksums are there and the sentences are reasonably formed

-It might be worthwhile to check some of these sentences in an online nmea0183 checksum checker

- also read this perhaps http://lefebure.com/articles/nmea/ it might give you some ideas.

- the real problem is the very consistent <0x0D><0x0A> at the end.
- Take the text file and convert those to eol with a text editor, then try to run it in opencpn.
- Does it work?
- The NASA Clipper did this exact same thing, I believe.

The Moitessier HAT has an on-board antenna, and I suspect the lack of satellites is because it is deep indoors ... but that shoudl not stop OpenCPN displaying the magnetic heading from wherever it imagines it's current position to be should it? as I have a mag heading sensor .. and I think I see APHDM messages in there?

No, they are all perfectly normal and correct, the checksum is the bit after the * and the <0x0D><0x0A> are the correct hex codes for CR and LF respectively, also, the <green> tag tells you that OpenCPN read them and liked them.

RIght, after blowing away the card and starting the install again from scratch, it all works! ... back as you were. thnaks as always.


Now I just have to figure out how to move the OSenc charts over from the previous install sd card onto this new one .. and hope they work!

Are these values turned on on the HAT?

They were and you can see the APHDM messages int he log above ... anyway, its fine now, I reinstalled from NOOBS again, ran through the setup and this time it seems to be working.
