Nmea Debug Window ability to copy

When did we lose the ability to highlight and copy the nmea data?
This feature was very useful!

New bug and O faiilure.

Go into Edit and highlight a line that does conversion or something, and high light and cut it out of the field. The close the edit window.

Opencpn then fails

Rick...
I tried some fields but not the same result. What option/preference did you try.

Re: Nmea Debug Window ability to copy

I tried in the NMEA debug window and can confirm, that text can not get selected and copied.
Cant remember if it worked in previous versions but think it should be a very useful feature.
W10 latest updates , os build 16299.309
O 4.8.2

PS: I noticed same behaviour in the about dialog and also the Windows dialogues when looking up the version and build - so maybe it was always so.

Hakan, Its the regular old reliable Nmeadebug window that is started from Options > Connections then check show nmeadebug window.

We used to be able to copy the nmea text when in the Pause mode.

Also I would really like a shortcut key "D" to start the window up without having to go to Options > Connections and then check the box!

Are you able to copy the nmea messages? What OS?

Re: Nmea Debug Window ability to copy

Under macOS I can't copy from the NMEA data flow when paused.

Rick,

Please give exact steps/clicks. I can try to duplicate. What does it mean “Go into Edit”?

Re: Nmea Debug Window ability to copy

Rick..
As far as I remember the NMEA debug has never been an edit box where one can highlight and copy from. But my memory is the light one so I may be wrong.

Shortcut "D" is BTW already occupied.

My solution to save a NMEA flow is to start VDR and it's all saved. But seldom used or needed so it might be different for me?

Re: Nmea Debug Window ability to copy

Well, it's very possible I am remembering something that never existed, but I thought that we used to be able to pause nmeadebug window and then highlight the nmea text and right click copy it to the clipboard, much like we can do when sending a grib request, so that users have an option to paste the code into an email program of their choice.

If I am mistaken about that, maybe I should just make a request under feature requests, but I thought we used to have that ability.

Hakan, what does D do?I don't see it on the shortcuts list
https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...oard_shortcuts

Which should be added, but if not it would be good for a nmea debug window shortcut.

TDan
Playing VDRplayer or VDR_pi with a file.
Options > Connections > check Show Nmea Debug Window. Then close Options. and the Nmea Debug Window stays up scrolling the nmea file. Hit Pause. The window freezes. Then we used to be able to highlight all or a portion of that nmea code right-click and copy.

Re: Nmea Debug Window ability to copy

Rick,

So the right mouse click causes a crash or something after that?

Re: Nmea Debug Window ability to copy

Well, I didn't think it crashed, but I just tried selecting some text from this area of nmea debug window (and it won't select or highlight) and then right clicked and have made it crash.

Second try, after restart get the nmea debug window open and close Options. Then hit Pause. Then try dragging my cursor to select text from the nmea data stream, it won't highlight the text. Nothing happens. Then I try right-click anyway and no menu comes up to copy. Control -A to select all does not work either. But I am certain this used to be possible.

When I hit resume and then try to select in the scrolling window nothing happens and I can't highlight text (and I don't expect that to work) but when I right click on the scrolling text in the nmea debug window I get a blue spinner momentarily but I haven't been able to make it crash again in either pause mode or resume mode, so I guess that crash was an anomaly.

Re: Nmea Debug Window ability to copy

Rick..
Sorry - "D/d" open/close the XX-charts zoom/scale weighting or detail slider. XX depends on what is viewed; Raster, vector(S-57/oeSENC) or CM93. From (late) 4.8.2 and forward. I'm not 100% sure it was implemented already in the official 4.8.2. Pls try.

Re: Nmea Debug Window ability to copy

Why is this useful?
Good for testing and communicating what exactly is being output by Opencpn.
Good for users who are having problems so they can post the results in CF.
Good to be able to copy without taking the time and effort to save a file and then find the sentence or specific example, or have to recreate it and be sure all the details are correct.

That is why we had this ability before.

Re: Nmea Debug Window ability to copy

OK what about

  • "N/n open/close Nmea Debug Window"

Thanks, Now I remember. It works, both types. I've changed the list on the wiki, moving it up to the alphanumeric.

Rick,

I have submitted a pull request to github that implements a copy to clipboard feature for the debug window. It works in live or pause by copying the lines of text to the clipboard when the user clicks the new "Copy" button just below the existing "Pause" button. It copies all lines of text (visible or not) to the clipboard. The text control used does not allow right click/copy mouse operation. Anyway a button is more convenient for tablet users I think. And it is a lot faster then using mouse right click.
