Night Mode colour palette hard to see on LINUX

Firstly let me say how much I like opencpn,
But, I do have an issue with night time colours.
I have tried dimming the screen (Fn F7) and its still to bright so went for the night time pallette and for me the screen becomes unusable as can be seen in the picture

Is their some other way that say, the day time pallette can be used but get a red screen over the top? I saw mention that this could be an app for android, but I am on a linux laptop.
Or even just some different night time colours?

I regularly use OpenCPN night time, and prefer dimming the screen, if it is available and goes far enough. Otherwise I use the p"Change color scheme' F5/C button. The colors in the night time palette are according to a standard for electronic charts and works quite well in my opinion. You say that your pic shows that they are unusable. I don't understand what you mean. My only complaint would be the strong red used in the route, but then I can' repeat that problem on my laptop. Perhaps you are using a custom color?

There is also the option to use the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl + G" that cycles through green, red and normal screen.

This may or may not work on your particular computer. On my Acer laptop all options just works, while on my Panasonic CF-31 with a built in dimming function, OpenCPN's dimming does not work. Nor does the red/green layer shortcut work.

Cagney, None of the shortcuts work for me so I am thinking you are using windows, not linux.
The red/green "Ctrl + G" sounds like what I was after.

The issue I have is in the nighttime mode is for me there is little differentiation between shallow water colurs and land colours and I just feel uneasy with them compared to my main plotters nightvision colour palette

What I will try tonight is F.Lux and see if thats better.
There is a 2000k setting that makes the screen quite dull
That over the daytime colour palette may be my solution

Yep, F.lux is a massive win for me on Linux.

Daytime palette and fn f7 to drop the brightness a bit more if needed and smiles all round here.

Might be worth mentioning it for others in the FAQ/wiki
