Re: New Zealand Charts

Hi Marco,

I have had great success using -poly to generate Regular Mercator versions of the KAP file. I had to update your CHARTCAL.DIR with new MD5 keys for the following charts

NZ7625
NZ885
NZ5223
NZ5125
NZ2411

These were all minor NTMs which I don't believe effected the calibration in any way.

They're all now working well in PolarView.

I did come across one thing. As a comparison I wanted to do a conversion using NOAA Chart Reprojector. I used the NOAA script you provided over a fresh generation of the Transverse Mercator charts generated using the original non -poly versions of the scripts and software.

The NOAA Chart Reprojector only generated 200 Files. After some investigation, I found that the remaining 133 had a PR value of MERCATOR in their header even though they were created using "mc2bsbh.exe" which was causing them to be skipped. I've attached a simple file of the listing.

This is not causing me any issues apparently, I was just interested if there was a reason for this

Anyway. I will work out how to get the Regular Mercator versions published if there's any interest.

Tks again for all your hard work

Ciao Jaitt

1) NZ885 MD5 in CHARTCAL V33 should be fine and I would like to better investigate why you had to correct it. For the other 4, the new maps have been published by LINZ in June so they will be updated in next V34 (say end of July)

2) The NOAA reprojector should have generated 201 maps. Those are the only maps in the NZ portfolio originally in TRANSVERSE MERCATOR that need to be reprojected in MERCATOR. The other 133 are already in MERCATOR so no reprojection is required.

3) If you use the -poly version of mc2bsbh you do not get a MERCATOR chart reprojected from the original transverse mercator. You obtain the regular original TRANSVERSE MERCATOR chart with included the reference georef polynomials that help polarview in quilting such maps. So no reprojection is required but a less precise georef algorithm (based on the polynomials) is implemented.

Ciao, Marco.

Kiora Marco,

1) NZ885 MD5 in CHARTCAL V33 should be fine and I would like to better investigate why you had to correct it. For the other 4, the new maps have been published by LINZ in June so they will be updated in next V34 (say end of July)

> OK, but don't stress over it. I did my eMail at 3am this morning so my eyes may have deceived me.

2) The NOAA reprojector should have generated 201 maps. Those are the only maps in the NZ portfolio originally in TRANSVERSE MERCATOR that need to be reprojected in MERCATOR. The other 133 are already in MERCATOR so no reprojection is required.
>> Again, 3am counting. Could be 201. Not at home right now. I will double check later, but again no great issues

>> Ah OK, I get it. So, are there advantages with One method over the other, NOAA vs -poly??? I now understand both processes, so I will just continue the one that produces the most appropriate charts.

Again, my thanks

I also appreciate your work with the New Zealand charts Marco.

It's great to have them now working in OpenCPN as well as Polar View.

Re: New Zealand Charts

Many thanks Marco for this very useful tool. I have been using it to create NZ charts for my android phone as a navigational back up. If anyone is interested the app I am using is the excellent freeware OruxMaps which can be downloaded from the android market or OruxMaps.

On the Oruxmaps site is a download link to OruxMapsDesktop which can very easily create map files for the app using .kap configuration files generated by KapGen and the map image file. Need to convert image file from .tif to .png first.

Fully functional nautical navigation on your phone, who would have thought it a few years ago!

Cheers

New Zealand Charts - V34 - 15 October 2011

Hello. Summar is quickly moving to the south seas so I think it's a good time to release an updated versione of the New Zealand charts portfolio.

Version V34 contains 334 charts ready to be used (.kap files) plus the related calibration data (CHARTCAL.DIR). Charts and calibration data can be found at the following link MCE66 - Software. From V33 to V34, 47 charts have been updated.

*************************
LINZ released New Editions of some charts:
NZ4315, NZ4315_1

LINZ released corrections of some charts:
NZ14065, NZ21, NZ23, NZ2411_1, NZ2411_2, NZ2411_3, NZ43, NZ4314, NZ4314_1, NZ5125, NZ52, NZ522, NZ5223, NZ5227, NZ53, NZ5321, NZ5322, NZ5322_1, NZ5322_2, NZ5324, NZ5325, NZ5325_1, NZ533, NZ541, NZ5413, NZ542, NZ542_1, NZ542_2, NZ614, NZ614_1, NZ614_2, NZ615, NZ6152, NZ6152_1, NZ661, NZ6612, NZ6612_1, NZ6612_2, NZ6612_3, NZ7625, NZ7625_1, NZ7625_2, NZ7653, NZ7656, NZ7656_1

Please substitute/rebuild/delete above charts if you have old versions.

To date, the only charts in the LINZ portfolio (NZ 202 Catalogue) not released as tiff images (and then not included in this NZ KAP charts portfolio) are: NZ14052, NZ14060, NZ14602, NZ14604, NZ14607, NZ1414, NZ8266, NZ4064 (British), NZ4636 (British), NZ4637 (British). Hope to see these charts released as tiff images by LINZ...

*************************

The chart building process is based on calibration data plus the tools KapGen and mc2bsbh. If you want to buid all NZ charts and all the upgrades above, download the new ChartCal-V34.zip and the required tools ( MCE66 - Software ) then build (or rebuild) with KapGen all the charts you need (when upgrading a chart from a old version, first delete the related tif file from /Img folder).

Of course you can also just download the charts set already built: download file NewZealandNauticalCharts_V34.7z you can find at the same location ( MCE66 - Software ).

Happy sailing in fair winds and following seas.

Buon Vento. Ciao, Marco

Re: New Zealand Charts

Thanks for all your great work with this. The last charts looked great, although I have only used most of them for armchair navigating. However there seems to be a little problem with your server as there is no content on your page.

Haaghhh!!!!. You're right. My web page is empty! I'll try to restore it tonight.

Until then, these are the links to the V34 CHARTCAL and Maps for direct download.

Ciao, Marco.

New Zealand Charts - V36 - 15 September 2012

Hello. After a while, the updated release of the New Zealand charts portfolio is now available.

Version V36 contains now 335 charts ready to be used (.kap files) plus the related calibration data (CHARTCAL.DIR). Charts and calibration data can be found at the following link MCE66 - Software.

LINZ has released the tiff of the chart NZ14060 so 1 new chart have been added to the portfolio.

From V35 to V36, 76 charts have been updated/added: LINZ released New Publication (as tiff) of 1 chart, released New Edition / Reprint of 27 charts, released Correction of 45 charts. I also have made small correction of Calibration/Borders of 3 charts. Have a look to the History.txt file for more details.

Please delete/rebuild/substitute modified charts if you have old versions.

*************************

The chart building process is based on calibration data plus the tools KapGen and mc2bsbh. If you want to buid all NZ charts and all the upgrades above, download the new ChartCal-V36.zip and the required tools ( MCE66 - Software ) then build (or rebuild) with KapGen all the charts you need (when upgrading a chart from a old version, first delete the related tif file from /Img folder).

New Zealand Charts V36 in Mercator projection

Hello.

For People that need the NZ charts reprojected in Mercator, I've used the NOAA reprojector to convert all the 201 NZ Transverse Mercator charts to Mercator.

Here is the link to the file: NewZealandNauticalCharts_V36_ReprojectedToMercator .7z

The above file contains the whole set of 335 charts including both the original NZ charts already in Mercator (134 charts) plus the 201 reprojected charts. So just download the above file and use it instead of the original NewZealandNauticalCharts_V36.

Please note that the non reprojected charts (see previous post #29) are slightly better if you don't need all the charts to be in Mercator. I've done a very little test on these charts. Let me know.

To do the same by yourself (Win only):
  • download and install KapGen ( MCE66 - Software )
  • download latest CHARTCAL-V36.zip and replace file CHARTCAL.DIR in Kapgen\Calibration folder with the newest CHARTCAL.DIR (V36)
  • download or build all V36 charts. V36 charts must stay in BSB folder of KapGen
  • download and install NOAA chart reprojector ( Nautical Chart Reprojector - Tools - Digital Coast )
  • download script in post #8 and place ConvertAllToMercator.cmd in a folder you have to create at the same level of BSB folder in KapGen
  • double click on ConvertAllToMercator.cmd and wait...
In 30 minutes all Transverse Mercator Charts in NZ set will be reprojected in Mercator.

Ciao, Marco.
