You found it! Unless you can get the " Fast cheap AIS using $20 rtl-sdr DVB-T SDR Dongles !" up and running on Windows.

I have the dongle working on my 32 bits eepc as well, using Xubuntu 13.04. I gave up using 12.04 due to dependencies problems.

A minor mystery to me is that I only get the plugin to work, that is receiving and displaying nmea sentences, if I start OpenCPN from the command line, but not using the menu: Applications Menu ->Education->OpenCPN. The command behind the menu link is just "opencpn".

Thomas, So you're saying I should change Linux Unbuntu 12.04LTS to something else because of dependencies? - Wha would you suggestt?

Also are you advising that these dongles won't work in Win7?

There is no gnuradio version for 12.04, and when trying to compile myself, gnuradio complained about a known bad version of libboost (IIRC), and refused to cooperate..... It may be possible to sort that out, but I preferred to move on when I saw dependency-hell looming on the horizon.
Both 12.10 and 13.04 should be OK. 13.04 for sure, as I now have tested both 32 &64 bits.

As for installing gnuradio and gr-ais an Win.... I don't know, but the road looks pretty rocky and hardware dependent.

Re: New rtlsdr Plugin

Thank you Thomas, perhaps that is also why Sean indicated that he did not think the rtlsdr.dll plugin for windows would work. It looks I will be upgrading to 13.04 when the time comes.

I'm on ubuntu 10 and it works. I know really old but I have trouble upgrading with bad internet.

Your problem is the ais_rx.py script is not in the path. I need better error reporting for this.

If someone makes it work I am happy to integrate patches. If you can run ais_rx.py in gr-ais and get ais messages output then it maybe works already.

Nope, that's not it. /usr/local/bin is in $PATH.

Just a bit of luck, I suppose....
I really had expected more fiddling!

I am late to the game, I ordered the same donle today, and will be testing on Gentoo Linux. rtlsdr_pi compiled already.

Re: New rtlsdr Plugin

Hi,

I bought a dongle with "RTL2832U + R820T" and I would like to try the "rtlsdr Plugin".
I read "Fast cheap AIS using $20 rtl-sdr DVB-T SDR Dongles !" thread and I am completely lost. Do I need any extra software like: gnuradio, sdr#, gr-ais.py or aismon?
Maybe somebody wrote a how-to and could share with me.

Re: New rtlsdr Plugin

Some literature:
RTL-SDR Tutorial: Cheap AIS Ship Tracking - rtl-sdr.com
RTL-SDR compatibility list v.2 [work in progress, please help!] : RTLSDR

From the second source it seems that your dongle is not supported.

Yes, you will need some additional software - see the first source for example.

Re: New rtlsdr Plugin

Thanks for links,

I checked second one and finally I found on that page that "RTL2832U + R820T" is supported - "For anyone that reads this in the future: the R820T dongles are supported now."

I chosen this one because I read comparison between R820T and E4000 RTL2832U / R820T vs RTL2832U / E4000 | Ham Radio Science
I found that at 162MHz (Channel 87 – 161.975 MHz and Channel 88 – 162.025 MHz) R820T is better.
"NOAA Weather Band
Both sticks were able to receive the local NOAA weather broadcast at 162.400MHz with their whip antennas with no problems. Again the R820T was slightly stronger."

Maybe this help other people to chose better one dongle in the future.

Re: New rtlsdr Plugin

Sean is looking for feedback on use of these plugins. Particularly the use of rtlvdr in Windows.
