New Guy to Nav Software

I have down loaded Open CPN onto my Mac, and it comes up with a black screen with blue land edges. I have downloaded the charts but I cant work out how to choose them.

Can I get some basic pointers as to how to start with this software?

I'm a newbie to Open CPN myself. I have found it pretty straight forward using the manual below.

OpenCPN User Manual

That's the extent of my programming skills. Open CPN is an excellent project. If there was more of this sort of collaboration, the world would be a better place.
