Re: New grib presentation

Jean, would you like to work collaboratively with Sean on the same codebase? Seems like the best way to move the project along, you have lost nothing but gained significantly by sharing your work. There is no reason the two authors shouldn't work together on it, provided the git details are worked out, making a separate git area with improvements, then "commit" when done. Sean, Jean may need some assistance on getting the git commands right. I'd be interested too, as I'm trying to learn this as well. Which branch should Jean be working on for the merged grib? --sean/grib_enhancements or what?

Re: New grib presentation

Hej Hakan,

I know that i can use mouse pointer over the position I'm interested in and read the value for that position in the grib plugin window. I i like the way that qtvlm have the same distance between the wind barbs on the screen, not depending on the zoom level.

Re: New grib presentation

Lars, Scale dependent arrows, I had not noticed that in qtVlm

Jean and Sean, I tried wxFormBuilder on grib_pi.pdb and did not see the Horizontal scroll, so I could not fix it. Jean perhaps you could do that, because you have windows running, and probably know far more about wxBuilder than I.

Also we need you to add the Saildocs selections mentioned above for email as we are missing that too. It would also be very nice to download direct from the internet a la zygrib, various locations, maybe in future?

Jean I was working with sean/grib_enhancements branch, FYI

Thanks,

Re: New grib presentation

Yes two types of queries would be perfect
  • A lightweight, for saildocs
  • And one heavier for zyGrib (an automatic request exist)
thank you

Re: New grib presentation

There are several ways to retrieve the grib data, and several sources. We also have to remember current data, where there are other sources than the ones for wind, waves, etc.

I believe that it is important that you as a user can setup presets for a certain area, in order to automate the retrieval of the necessary data. When you sail one or two person on board over a longer distance it is necessary to automate.

It might be an idea to make modules for the different sources

Re: New grib presentation

Lars and Michael,
Perhaps we should develop a partial list of most popular sources with the
Title/Name, Grib-Type(s), URL, & Short description, Format required.

That way we can determine what will be needed to define the download for each site, along with format needed so that those "Modules" can be made.

Re: New grib presentation

good evening
The easiest and most effective, but Ptizef knows ...
Sailsdocs: Home Page
Zygrib: zyGrib : fichier grib, visualisation météo
I sail all year round, I assure you that this is sufficient.

Re: New grib presentation

If you look around on the internet, there are several sources that cover the entire globe. A way to systemize it to say that a couple of different types of grib-file covering;
• Wind, wave, cloud cover, sea temperature, pressure, precipitation and air temperature.
Current and sea temperature
• Etc.
Each of the above exists in both Grib1 and Grib2, and can be retrieved by the following methods;
• Mail
• Ftp

Re: New grib presentation

Ptizef,

Here is another source for Free Gribs by email.
FREE GRIB Files | Marine Weather Charts | Global Marine Networks

Here is the format for the emails
http://www.globalmarinenet.com/publications/grib.txt

Have you been working on the merged version? I've been 'git fetch -all' and periodically I see new files added under your name for my repositiory.

Should I get on your branch and try a git pull and compile? I'd like to see what you have done.

Best
Rick

Hi Rick

I've a copied merged grib_enhancements in branch GRIB_FROM_SEANDEPAGNIER were I've just made it working with Windows. I think Seans has merged my commits.
As I explained to Sean, He has done a very big job in the plugin's heart , and every things are changed. It's very difficult to me, as a no skilled coder, because I have to re-learn how all this stuff works and I find Sean's code very professonal and complex (two days only to make it working-a crash and two others small buggs)
I have olso made some improvements in NEW_GRIB .
You can off course merge what you want

That's great, we had a problem with a horizontal scroll appearing over the Grib filename in the dropdown, which made it difficult. I tried to find the problem usingg wxFormbuilder (a new tool for me) and was unable to do that. Is that fixed now?
I believe in Linux this does not happen.

I understand. I wish I could code as you do. When I get time....

I'm willing to do the Dutch translation. Could some post or point me to the language file?
