When you get the grib by email you have to copy the received grib into some folder where the plugin of OpenCPN can find it.
When you get the grib by zyGrib it is already in a folder which the plugin was pointed to.

The only benefit might be when you have a poor internet connection such as a sat-phone.

Re: New Grib Presentation

Well, there probably are people who have the poor connection, otherwise all those e-mail grib services would not exist... We are probably looking for something like Use Mail.app to send emails from the command line rather than a way to make people set up the MTA. I have no idea whether it works, less if it is the ideal solution.

Re: New Grib Presentation

For the average Mac user using Applescript or Python is as well complicated as using sendmail/postfix.

Yes, AppleScript could possibly help....I found this nugget
on http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/M...gramming_Guide

...... you can in fact just rely on OS X to do the right thing and pick the user's default web browser and email client if you instead use these variations:

fpsystem('open "http://gigaset.com/shc/0,1935,hq_en_0_141387_rArNrNrNrN,00.html"');

and

fpsystem('open "mailto:ss4200@invalid.org"');

Yes, obviously, that's why we are looking for a script we can bundle to save the user this problem...

Re: New Grib Presentation

Instead of looking for new scripting languages why not rewrite the whole OpenCPN and plugins with Qt which seems to be a more powerful multiplatform programming tool than wxWidgets?
There seems to be some people out there like Sean which have enough spare-time to do that.

Re: New Grib Presentation

If you look in some sources of plugins you will find comment lines like that:
Code:
/* wx widgets is ****, can only allow users
to edit the first column, so this doesn't work */
I do have other remarks of plugin programmers which are confused about wxWidgets. One of them also thought about a rewrite in Qt but finally leaved the community. After all it might be a project of several years...

It might be also these programmers are not capable but I don't think so since their plugins are really nice.

I have found myself several issues in xWidgets which not have been fixed. For example in OS X Mavericks the font names have changed. This was fixed in Qt but not in wxWidgets until today although they know the problem.

BTW the well known GoogleEarth was done with Qt too.

You mean XP right ?
I can't reproduce and it never happened to me with XP, Vista
and W8.1
The only rule is to have Thunderbird correctly set (means you can
send mails with it manually), and set as 'main mail system'
May be you could try to replace the Mapi32.dll file in windows/system32
by a new one found on the net ?

Re: New Grib Presentation

Just for the record, I have had no problems with linkage to Thunderbird from grib_pi in Win 7 and Win XP it works very well and I find it very useful. I particularly like the ability to choose the parameters I need, and then copy the grib command. It is tremendously useful.

Yes after you receive the requested grib, you need to save it to a folder and then select the grib file from grib_pi, just as you would with any email process.

Email (with grib file attached) process is THE ONLY WAY to get grib files via SSB Radio while on the ocean. These files can be no larger than 12 kb through saildocs, therefore careful use of the "Moving" or "Walking" Grib is most important. (See post #321 above: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post1523689 for details.

At the end of that post, I asked if anyone knew of a way to concatenate multiple grib files (merge them) into one file. I would like to join separate WAVE, PRESS and CAPE gribs (each less than 12 kb of the exact same moving/walking grib type) so that I can use them effectively after having received them via SSB (12kb max). Any suggestions?

Re: New Grib Presentation

By the way, to send the email, you configure in grib_pi, then copy the results to RMSExpress (winlink2000) and modify the request with closer lat long parameters, and the particularized request similar to the post #321. Then send via SBB and then later receive.

It would be nice to have some more configuration fields available in grib_pi request, but this is very manageable now.

I do not know what you use fow WINLINK access, but I can get files attachments up to 120K. I do not see the need to split grib files.
