moving routes/waypoints between computers

I have OpenCPN installed on 3 different windows based PCs (home, boat, work).
One is W7 the two other are XP
Is there a simple way to share waypoints, routes (and any ohter "user generated data") between them?
I looked into the information about portable installation but this does not seem to address the issue of these files (on W7 they are under the ProgramData directory and under XP I cannot find them).

Re: moving routes/waypoints between computers

Hello,

This fonctionality is very easy to handle via the Import/export functions in the Route Manager Menu.

Marks and Routes | Official OpenCPN Homepage

Re: moving routes/waypoints between computers

Thanks,

I am aware of the export/import functionality, but was wondering if there is procedure outside the program that would enable such transfer.

If indeed these data files MUST reside in the mentioned directories (i.e = Program Data in W7) then it also defeats portability. Will running the program in portable mode save these data files to a different directory (the program directory or one of its sub-directories)?

gbgb...
How does the location of opencpn's data files influence your ability to copy them to another machine, please?
If you want to transfer navobjects directly to another machine, just copy a single file, navobj.xml
The location from which and where to copy is to be found when you click to the ? icon in the toolbar and is different between XP and W7. Be sure opencpn is not running when you copy, obviously.

Re: moving routes/waypoints between computers

Thanks.
This is the info I was missing - the fact that it is only one file that has to be copied.
Or is it really only one file - what are the files that have the .1 .2 etc. extensions? Do they have to be copied as well?

gbgb...
the .X files are rolling backups, don't have to be copied, but come handy when something goes very wrong...

Re: moving routes/waypoints between computers

Pavel..

In the same breath,I notice the problem of exporting multiple waypoint files still has not been corrected in the new version? Using the bottom tab ´export all visible´ does exactly that, exports everything you see on the map,not everything visible in the Route Manager´s waypoint box.

Highlighting all the waypoints in the box only allows you to DELETE,not EXPORT.

I often have a large number of POI´s contained in ONE .gpx file, i.e. I list all my POI´s by country. Each time I import one of these multiple wpt .gpx files for editing,it is impossible to EXPORT them again, unless you do it one by one.

The only way out at the moment is to use an Xml copy editor with the present .gpx file and then edit the file. I was rather hoping this would be fixed in this new version.

I do this all the time and it is a simple procedure.

Under My Documents I create a folder 'A Navigation'. I use the A in front to make sure the folder is always at the time of the My Documents folder.

In that folder I create three sub-folders: Anchorages, Routes, and Tracks.

For each of these I use the Route Manager to export to the appropriate folder.

As I save anchorages and tracks, I precede the .gpx file with the date and short description. Routes are saved by area, short description, etc.

This folder, 'A Navigation', is easily transported between computers, sent via email, etc.

Pix below.

A fourth folder, Miscellaneous, is useful for saving annotations on the chart such as current directions, significant events, etc. which have been created as waypoints.

HTH, Terry
