More than OpenCPN heart when starting O ?

hello Dave,

I have open this task : FS#2163 (O 4.5.x):

"Since it's been that I use OpenCPN, I have my foibles.

At minimum, I use in navigation, obviously the OpenCPN heart but also the plugin "Dashboard", the registration plugin "VDR". Also, before starting the navigation, so when I run OpenCPN, I click the "Track" button to save my track.

But I happened to forget, too often, click the "Track" button as I happened to forget to start VDR recorder.

I would like to have during my period of navigation, automatic start recording the track and VDR plugin at the time of starting OpenCPN.

In short, I'd like ad-hoc options are in place to ensure my not forget anything in launching OpenCPN.

I am too in a dream or idea it is a need that exceeds my little person?"

Best regards. Gilletarom.

You are correct. OpenCPN is not user friendly.
Center boat on the screen should always be on, e.g.
Why is "Show Text" disabled by default? OK, once enabled it remains enabled.
I suggest to be able to store desired settings and also the plugins you mentioned by the the user and survive these settings for next startup.

Re: More than OpenCPN heart when starting O ?

Is it possible to write a startup script that will cause OpenCPN to start with the desired settings enabled?

There is no need for a startup script but all the settings done by the user should be stored the same way as it was done already for the "Show Text" disable/enable. Understand?
Right now OpenCPN is a disaster, not intuitive, and hard to understand for a new user how OpenCPN acted. It has taken years e.g. that menu items are needed.

Gilletarom...

By design, and by my testing, Track enable is persistent. If it was enabled when you shut down, it will be enabled when you next start up.

Is this not working for you?

For the VDR, and in general, we cannot adjust the startup activity state of the PlugIn in the OCPN core. This is up to the PlugIn itself. You can see that Dashboard does this correctly. The state is retained over OCPN restart.

VDR is quite an old PlugIn. Perhaps the developer/maintainer can comment.

Carcode:
As usual, specific recommendations for improvement are appreciated. Sweeping generalizations are not useful.

Thanks
Dave

That is correct for plugins not delivered together with OpenCPN. But for plugins delivered together with OpenCPN this is not correct.

To overcome imprecise recommendations it might be useful to publish instructions for plugin programmers.

I am a stupid man!

I had never noticed that the track was automatically active at every rebooting O, if we do not manually stopped at the previous use of O!

And obviously, I had got used to stop, manually, track before closing O, at the end of a stage of navigation.

I just tested with old recordings, and indeed, the trace remains active. This part of my application becomes obsolete.

But for VDR, what I want is valid.

Best regards. Gilletarom.

Yes, it is possible to write an external script what alters opencpn.ini contents before starting OpenCPN, — search for “bash ini file edit” to get examples on different approaches.
