Thank You Dan. What I'd like now is to receive comments. I'll try in my spare time to write down some "light" documentation of the parameters and on the calibration process. The most important think now is to understand if we are moving in the right direction of if there are cases not covered or covered in a wrong way.

Ciao, Marco.

Dan..Marco..

Perhaps this is a service to up/download our various mapping paraphernalia.
Files or directories can be shared with or without password free up to 5 GB.
Upgrading to 100 GB is about $75.- per year.

I have set up a test account. Have a look:

Beta 5 now available. - No functional changes.
  • Now handles headers with an unlimited number of lines.
  • Fix to be able to compile with gcc 4.3.2
  • Some code changes were made for maintainability.
FYI, if a new beta ever introduces a bug that makes it unusable, hopefully you saved the previous version. But, if not, all previous version are on the download page under the History section.

Incredible stuff. I managed to convert some charts from the danish sea-area to BSB and to view it in OpenCPN.

Marvellous! Thanks and thanks again!

At first I had to convert from a very proprietary format used in Denmark and Sweden(I believe). I managed, since I incidentally got access to a program called VisIT Plus 5.01.

I have seen a couple of swedish members in this thread.

Do you happen to know a better way to convert the files with the format .IT in 'Det levende Søkort',/'Levande Sjökart' to something else. I managed, yes, but only because I got access to the VisIT-program through a friend. The VisIT 5.01 can convert .IT-files to JPG, GeoTiff and a few more, but it's not a freeware program.

Sorry, no. It' not listed for ImageMagick, which handles the most formats of anything I am familiar with.

Glad you have a way, though...

Something strange is going on with the conversion process. I calibrated two separate charts, one in Harwich, the othe the Thames estuary. The Thames estuary works fine on it's own,but with the Harwich chart included in the same directory, none of the charts will display and a weird red framework is shown, linking the two charts together?

It is the same whatever release of OpenCPN I use.. Suggestions anyone?

Re # 112

Found the problem... Once I checked the final .hdr file I realized the MAPCAL.DIR file contained the headers of both charts.

Still have problems displaying my overview chart of the English channel straddling the Greenwich meridian.

I have tried to get mc2bsbh to work but the resulting kap file does not display correctly in opencpn, seaclear, capn etc.. the image seems to be scewed. Perhaps some one has run into this problem?

version list

Hello ZPex,

You should tell us exactly what you did (the file you started from, the calibration you did, etc.). Then you should post here at least the CHARTCAL.DIR from MapCal and the header you got from mc2bsbh.

If you put us in condition to replicate exactly your steps, we can maybe find the problem.

Ciao, Marco.

Thanks Marco,
OK started with multiple files that were in the old maptech format (hdr with the 640x480 chunks of images) using the gimp I put these "Chunks" together and created image file 11461.png (tried multiple formats png, bmp etc..). Calibrated the gif with mapcal saving the CHARTCAL.DIR (this is the only chart in the CHARTCL.DIR file). used the following commands to run the conversions.
convert 11461.png -colors 127 11461.gif
convert 11461.gif -colors 127 11461.tif
mc2bsbh CHARTCAL.DIR
tif2bsb -c 127 11461.hdr 11461.tif 11461.kap

here are the files
Attached Files
File Type: txt 11461.hdr.txt (540 Bytes, 155 views)
File Type: txt CHARTCAL.DIR.txt (543 Bytes, 136 views)

I have never started with a .png. And I note that the CHARTCAL.DIR says the image is a .gif. I didn't know Mapcal could handle a .gif. I thought it only did .bmp and .png.

The only time I have seen results like that were from a corrupted image. But I have never seen that exact result. So, I don't know what could be wrong, but here are some suggestions and questions.

Try the ImageMagick "identify" command to check the stats of the .tif and post the results in here.

Will Gimp open the .tif that you are using in tif2bsb?

Is the size of that tif actually 8320x6720? (I don't think that is it, the results don't look like it...)

Also, any warning messages as a result of any of the commands?

Dan,
yes mapcal can handle gifs just choose the "any file" type and choose the gif file. it will open and you can calibrate it. the CHARTCAL.DIR has shows .gif because it was probably the last image type i tried.

Yes the gimp can open the image.
yes the size is 8320x6720

here are the identify results
11461.tif TIFF 8320x6720 8320x6720+0+0 4-bit PseudoClass 16c 3.489MiB 0.000u 0:00.000

Thanks,
Greg

also, the original image is created from 182 640x480 images, each one being a 640x480 piece of the whole chart 14 high 13 across
