For the sake of completeness it should be perhaps added, that radios that do send DSC sentences over NMEA, send them over a separate cable (serial 4800 Baud), not via the AIS+GPS connection (38400 Baud or USB). Such radio has to be specifically wired to the PC/chartplotter.

It should then be very easy to spot the red diamond, and see the distance and bearing to the vessel in distress at the top of AIS Target List.
