Marine Traffic AIS targets via API Key

Hi all.. Been away from the forum so long I had to re-register (sinbad7) a new account as user ´sinbad8 ´.

Does anyone know if it is possible to use Marine Traffic´s API key as a plugin to display their LIVE database of AIS targets on OCPN?

Grateful for suggestions..

Regards

Tore (in Brazil)

I think it's possible, but when I looked into this, the service cost money to gain a key.

Re: Marine Traffic AIS targets via API Key

You don't need neither Marine Traffic nor a plugin nor to pay something.
Simply get the IP address and port number of an AIS server and make a new network connection in settings of OpenCPN.
E.g.: IP 80.78.213.46 with port 6492 for the Baltic Sea area and have fun.

Thanks Gerhard..

Yes,I know, but I think Marine Traffic has the most comprehensive AIS coverage.

Unless you know of a similar IP service?

Re: Marine Traffic AIS targets via API Key

Tore...
First of all, be a bit careful when you post access keys to paid services on public Internet forums, the guys running those services tend not to like it...
You can't use the MT API directly in any way from OpenCPN. You would need a middleware that uses periodic calls to AIS API Documentation - AIS Marine Traffic and when a new ship appears to AIS API Documentation - AIS Marine Traffic and then construct AIS NMEA messages from it and outputs them to your local network (not very complicated). Or write a plugin that draws a complete overlay, perhaps with some more advanced features using the rest of the API (more complicated).
I really doubt someone who does not need it for himself will invest his money and free time to implement support for this commercial service with limited usability for our general userbase though.

On a different note...
You can put Marinetraffic and your own boats position on your own website for free. Adjusting the code you can zoom in as much as you want.

Re: Marine Traffic AIS targets via API Key

Tore,
I don't know why I should have informations about AIS targets in the Pacific when I'm sailing in the Mediterranean e.g. Furthermore all these solutions might be nice for an armchair sailor but not a real sailing boot. There is a more or less long delay of AIS signals over IP and very few people are able to receive IP at sea.
So better buy an AIS receiver, they are pretty cheap these days.

Carcode..

Although many of us have become armchair sailors, there are still great advantages to be able to check for AIS traffic in your neighborhood when you are in port with Internet connection, especially for those without an AIS receiver.

Being able to receive AIS targets world-wide does not mean you HAVE to look at Hawaii when you are anchored in the Bahamas near an internet source.

It is also interesting to follow friends and fellow sailors outside of your own AIS receivers range.

I am aware you can embed the Marine Traffic AIS sources in your own web page as I also have done. (See attached)

Thanks for all your inputs.. The case is clear, not possible to input AIS data in OpenCpn from Marine Traffic.

Tore,
nobody said you should not play with your internet as you like.
But an AIS plugin for OpenCPN like this is nonsense.

Re: Marine Traffic AIS targets via API Key

No,not really needed in my playpen, whilst I can get ALL the information I need completely free and readily available on my Galaxy tablet,it was merely a question. I use AIS to follow my son on his ventures on-board s.y. Ocean Viking, presently cruising the Norwegian fjords

Shows the level of intelligence making fun of ´armchair´ sailors, you will be one yourself one day. For the record, bet I have logged thousands of miles around the world in my sea-going days. Don´t like the tone of some of the ´numbheads´ on this forum.

Mark, did you also know you can report your position via an app, or via email using satphone when out of AIS range. Handy for letting family and friends and stalkers know where you are.
The app is called mAIS
Marine traffic has the details for emailing position reports.

Thanks. No I didnt know. And I wont use it because being at sea is the last sanctuary in a mans life. Though I wouldn't mind a cute stalker if she has the right ballast.
