Marine Traffic 1 vessel AIS Satellite tracking
The 1 ship AIS Satellite tracking subscription of just US$ 16.- per month is really great for families, friends and owners wishing to trace their vessel across the oceans. Great also for offshore sailing regattas.
I am presently following the ms Soroy,a small Norwegian coastal passenger/freight vessel on her delivery voyage from Norway to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands via the Panama Canal. She left Las Palmas a couple of days ago and is now changing her course more Westerly, near Cap Verde Isl.
Marine Traffic displays ALL ship targets derived by satellite, but only shows full details with subscriptions for 1 or more vessels.
Well spent money to equip your boat with an AIS transponder, which not only let YOU see other ships but also let OTHER ships see you. Class A transponders cost more than class B,but will always be visible to the satellite. Not always so with class B.

Re: Marine Traffic 1 vessel AIS Satellite tracking
Visibility mixed depending on what equipment is present and a couple of other factors.
I tracked our clients sailing from RSA to Europe. Visibility was at best only 50%. We had 99% success with InReach. Money better spent.
Cheers,
b.

Re: Marine Traffic 1 vessel AIS Satellite tracking
I followed myself around on occasion during our 3 year cruise from California to Florida.
What I saw is that AIS Class B only appears in areas where there is heavy commercial traffic. For example the Panama Canal.
It does not report positions for Class B outside those areas.

Re: Marine Traffic 1 vessel AIS Satellite tracking
Barney... Yes, I had very good experience too with inReach tracking of a friend´s sailing boat from St Martin to Horta, and a couple of months later to Portugal.
Yes,there are many patches still not covered by Marine Traffic´s AIS Satellite, but a dang ting better than nothing at an affordable price. ´A´ type transducers absolutely recommended for max coverage.

Re: Marine Traffic 1 vessel AIS Satellite tracking
I can't find a $16/1 ship satellite plan on Marine Traffic.... Plans & Pricing - Subscription Plans Options | AIS Marine Traffic ... maybe some other company?
Jeremiason.... it is only quite recently that Marine Traffic started showing satellite AIS .... both paid and the ones with no info for us in the cheap seats.... it does show class B offshore these days.

It's their "Add-on" plan. I've not tried this plan, so there may be complications.

El Pinguino..
It also works on your Android phone/tablet if you download/purchase the ´official´ OpenCPN app from Google Play.
( I am talking about the 1 ship (My Fleet) AIS Satellite tracker from Marine Traffic. )
I remember Port Montt from a couple of years ago when I tracked/assisted a friend of mine through the ´Intra coastal` fjords from Ushuaia to Port Montt.
I remember having to create maps from Google Earth in some places.
The marina was on the Eastern side of the main port.

Another thread on S-ais here

Seemed to be quite useful even for class B systems.

Marine Traffic 1 vessel AIS Satellite tracking
I have tried MarineTraffic SAT AIS to track my Class B. Works fine with a good aerial. It is a bit hard to find where to buy for a single yacht on their web site but it is there. I turned it on for 1 month then cancelled. No problem.

Re: Vesseltracker AIS Satellite tracking
I am doing a test comparison between the Marine Traffic 1 ship AIS Sat system and Vesseltracker on a free test basis. Don´t know if they have a 1 vessel tracking. They also have a PC based service as well as their own Android based app.
I attach a live sample from ms Soroy (Moana Nui) at the moment close to Cap Verde islands, heading West for St.Kitts, the Panama Canal and final destination of Rarotonga.
Also the Vesseltracker Android version..

Re: Marine Traffic 1 vessel AIS Satellite tracking
El Penguino..
I just did a checkup on a few sailboats in Puerto Montt which I am certain all have class ´B` AIS transponder, and they are all detected by the satellites.
See attached from Vesseltracker AIS Satellite.
