Maps for OpenCPN

I will start off by saying that I am very new to chartplotting. It seems that using my computer as a chartplotter with Open CPN is a good way to go.

My question is where can I get Canadian maps (ie Manitoba). Do maps such as garmin G2 maps, C-maps by Jepessen, or Navionics maps work with Open CPN??

01durango..

As mentioned by Dan,you can download bitmap versions of charts from Chart Sources | Official OpenCPN Homepage.

I have converted a couple of .kap charts to get you started with OpenCPN.
Send your email address to my PM (private messaging here) and I will forward the charts.

...
Actually, that isn't what those links are at all.

The first link explains which formats OpenCPN supports.

The second link has links where you can download charts for free. Lots of links. Not just bitmaps, but vector as well. These links were gathered over time by many people, and probably have almost every source for free charts.

Don't know what your concern is Dan,I mentioned the link to download bitmaps for the Hudson Bay area, which has no vector charts presently.

As mentioned by Dan,you can download bitmap versions of charts from Chart Sources | Official OpenCPN Homepage.

Re: Maps for OpenCPN

That needs to be a sticky post. How many threads have been about "what can I upload to Open CPN?" And "where can I get charts?"

I know I am guitly of asking on occasion (only once I swear!).

Very helpful guys! Keep up the good work.

01durango-as an aside, you can download Canadian Topographic maps for that area. These are GeoTiffs and have the corner positions included.I've just been converting a bunch to the Kap format OpenCPN likes and can wander about with the gps inland. If you're interested,I'll describe process but the links you'll want are:

The Atlas of Canada - Toporama – Topographic Maps
to identify the mapsheet number and then

download it at

Index of /pub/toporama/50k_geo_tif

...there's several variation!of the above,if you want different mapsheets..UTM ,full sized with legend and so on...all sorts of stuff .
