Re: map2kap - OziExplorer to OpenCPN

Hi Chris,

from what you wrote, I am not sure what might have gone wrong in the conversion. The file sizes you report seem OK. Files compress by any factor from 5 to 40 when converted from TIFF to KAP on my side, too.

Your attachment of the KAP file didn't work, though, so I can't look at it any further for now. Did you try the KAP file with any other viewer or navigation software (like SeaClear)?

Regards

Horst

Thanks for coming back to me. I just downloaded and tried SeaClear (will be deleting it again shortly!). It loaded the chart, at first I thought it was all black but then realised that it was loaded in the wrong place. The calibration is off and showing up around 10 degrees south.

OCPN shows the chart outlines in the correct place.

The same .map file and image file correctly make a .kap with mapc2mapc which I found a copy of in the murky depths of my hard drive so I don't think there is anything wrong with the input files.

It's either a bug or finger trouble ... probably the latter!

Cheers
Chris

Re: map2kap - OziExplorer to OpenCPN

Hi Chris,

thanks for trying with SeaClear. If I understood your results with the map2kap-converted KAP file correctly,
  • SeaClear has the chart (and its outline?) about 10 degrees south of where it should be
  • OpenCPN has the chart outline where it should be, but still shows the chart contents about 10 degrees south
Correct so far?

Could you also send me the KAP file from mapc2mapc, for further analyis?

Regards

Almost. I have found that Mapc2mapc doesn't quite translate the projection correctly.. the author is looking into it.

SeaClear showed the chart at about 10 degrees South ... so 20 degrees north of where it should be.

OpenCPN has the chart outline in the correct place but doesn't show the contents at all.

I'll email you a Mapc2mapc generated KAP that displays but with the mentioned projection error.

Merry Christmas
Chris

Re: map2kap - OziExplorer to OpenCPN

Hi all,

I've just discovered Ozi map files and map2kap.

I went through the thread and was able to get a .kap file and load it into SeaClear.

However the water section is black and soundings are white lettering. The details are also pixelated to where it's almost unreadable.

Is this something common or that people know about? Is it a SeaClear issue or something to do with the way I created the .kap file?

Thanks for all your work as always. This community is great, when I can't figure something out often times I get the answers here.

korrigan...
It is impossible to say without having a look at a sample chart.

Re: map2kap - OziExplorer to OpenCPN

I guess I answered my own question.

I installed Opencpn on this machine and the chart looks good there.

BTW this is Windows 10, I'll try this on Linux later. I used whatever ruby came from my google search so it's newer than the recommended one.

I did mess with the path as per instructions but that didn't seem to work so I just put the .rb file in the folder where I needed it. The path for ruby was done automatically in the install.

If you're interested I found these charts here: https://openseachart.org/doku.php/rnc

And I converted this chart: http://www.velerolaargentina.com/Ozi/Chile/N22430.zip

Again, thanks for all the effort you guys have put into this stuff.

I assume that you have read this post: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ml#post1974567

The "program" is a script using the "Ruby" language.
Just search the net to learn more about possible issues with win 8.
On ubuntu it's just started as any script from the command line.

Hi Thomas
thanks for your reply. Yes I did read the thread and follow the instructions but other than following a step by step I start getting out of my depth very quickly! I'll keep trying

this sounds like your plotter is in night mode and the chart has night colors.
you can brighten the white letters by finding in the .kap file
RGB/X,0,0,0
then
NGT/X,55,55,55 (find the same number X)
and change it to
NGT/X,99,99,99 (it bugs out if more then 99)
