Mac: Unintended Zoom

Can anybody help?
I have often the problem that I cause an extreme, unintended zoom (in our out) by touching the mighty mouse (wrongly) e.g. when there is a lot of movement due to waves. OpenCPN is just way too sensitive on this while there is no really a problem with other programs.
The unintended zoom is very annoying. How can I switch off zooming by mouse ("-wheel") or reduce the sensitivity?

1. Apple Menu > System Preferences > Mouse.

2. Uncheck "Smart Zoom"
