Re: Looking for cheap USB gps for OCPN/Ubuntu14.04

I bought one of those BU-353's to use for vehicle navigation on my laptop. The unit held up well, though it finally went out when it fell off the dash. It was caught in the door as I was closing it. Smushed...it has not worked right since then.

Despite this, I ordered another to replace the damaged one as the unit itself worked very well. I was able to receive signal even when surrounded by high rise buildings. I created the problem with the original one, the unit was not the issue.

And no problem using it with a Ubuntu laptop, right?

It worked with Mint 14, pretty close to Ubuntu.

bought a brand new magellan gc explorist from a high st. retailer the other day for $20, plugged it in to opencpn, only had to reset the output to nmea, works. I think geocaching might have died in the arse so they were getting rid of old stock.

I have not had any trouble using mine with Ubuntu 12.04. Mine is the older BU-353-W which works with Windows Vista and Windows 7 but not Windows 8. The newer BU-353-S4 has slightly better specifications and is compatible with Windows 8. I would expect it to work easily with Ubuntu Linux but don't have any direct experience with it.

And... GOT IT! Works great. Also I got a Microsoft brand GPS dongle that came with Microsoft Streets And Trips to play nice with OCPN and Ubuntu. So I also have a backup!

The BU353 initializes really fast... faster than my Samsung Note3. I had a fix in under a minute from cold start. This is probably the best bang for the buck in marine electronics.

Re: Looking for cheap USB gps for OCPN/Ubuntu14.04

I know, I know, a little late, but if anybody is still looking I bought that one:
Buy G.Mouse Mini USB SiRF Star-III 20-Channel GPS Receiver for PC and Laptops
Free shipping and handling, works flawless with Ubuntu 12.04.
They also have the already mentioned BU-353S4:
GlobalSat BU-353S4 USB GPS Receiver - Free Shipping - DealExtreme
And no, I don't get a commission.
Cheers
