I am running a simulator that feeds GPS and AIS messages to OpenCPN. The time on the GPS messages is in 2010. I have set the logbook preferences to use UTC time but all the entries are using the GPS time. Why?

Also, if there is no GPS signal the log entries are Local time even though I have asked for UTC time in the preferences.

BTW When I am running the simulator with GPS times in 2010, OpenCPN creates its track data in present day UTC time which is correct.

Hello Paul,

The strange Sign-column is used in the maintenance tab and is with a
short example explained in the help. Click there on Naviagtion and in the image in the Sign-Column.

UTC-Time is normally delivered by your GPS, so for the logbook UTC is
only available when GPS is on. If GPS is off, then the the date and time
from you computer is used.
You can check this, by open the GPS-window in OpenCPN-Options in
the GPS-tab. -See attached image-

When the logbook doen't show UTC (with running GPS), then it's maybe corrected by your GPS. But this shouldn't happen !

If loaded version 1.191 up on sourceforge with the corrected CVS.

i just tried VDR-Recorder, same positive result as with NMEA-Studio.

BTW Would KML-Export a usefull option ?

I don't think this is true. OpenCPN is able to get the correct UTC time for its tracks even when the GPS time is some previous time. There must be a way to get it without the GPS.

Its one I wrote called AISTTM. It actually records both the AIS/GPS messages while running so you can replay it. I was replaying a script that comes with it that was created in 2010.

I was hoping your log messages generated while the script was playing had the same date/time as the track produced by OpenCPN. I have another program, C2GPXKML, that takes a SeacLear track and combines it with the SeaClear logbook to create a KML file so you can see your track with waypoints for the log events. Right now I use Seaclear to do this, see the attached kml file produced from SeaClear tracks and logbook. But I want to use your logbook and the OpenCPN track instead of SeaClear.

The CSV file is alright long as you get rid of the line feeds, but I can program around that problem.
What would be really useful is to do what I do now with my C2GPSKML program : create a kml file combining the track and logbook entries to produce a kml file of your trip. See the attachment.

the logbook stores and displays the time in the format you select in options. But this is a one-way-ticket, you cannot switch the display of data you entered before between UTC and local.

the mainprg. stores the tracks allways in UTC.
when you select in the logbook UTC you are in line with the mainprg..

to get the logbook-entries in localtime, please select the local radiobutton and select the timezone you are in.
If you now merge the track- with the logbook-data in a kml-file
you could e.g. search for the trackname in the logbook (ask if there are
multiple) and you get the data.

Did you take a look at the VDR-Plugin ? It does the same.

But when I select UTC in the preferences it is not displaying it as UTC time, its displaying the GPS time and they might not be the same.

BTW: the timezone can be a fraction of an an hour, eg: Newfoundland is -2.5. In fact it can be one quarter of an hour eg: +10.25

GPS and UTC have at this moment a difference of 16 seconds (GPS is ahead), as there are no leap seconds applied to the GPS clock. In difference to UTC or in consequence to the local time.

OK ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT OPENCPN I HAVE DOWNLODED EVERY VERSTION BUT ITS NOT WORKING ILL START IT AND WITH IN 1 MINIT I GET NOT RESPONDING THEN I HAVE TO RESTART MY COMPUTER ( NEED HELP)

Mikepeter,

please open a thread of it's own for your problem.
We would like to know the OS your are working under.
It would be interesting to see your install logs and the actual log.
Clicking on help you can locate these file.

And you don't have to SHOUT. We hear you :-)

I decided to add an option to ignore the time on my program because my problem with the time only occurs when I run my simulator. Attached is an example of the output using your logbook and the opencpn track.

Re: Logbook Konni for OpenCPN

Hello Paul,

i added kml-export in the logbook with tracks, too.
i'll make some checks and upload it in the next days.

My solution works with unique tracknames only at the moment.
