Thumbs up Linux Marine Distro

XINUTOP

DESCRIPTION

Xinutop-nav OS 4.0 is a Linux marine specialised disribution, including standard and lite applications from the Xfce family, and marine applications as:

- geBabbel: transfert and convert datas to and from many GPS.
- Hamfax: receive and display fax meteo from SSB radio, via soundcard or TNC.
- OpenCPN: Chartplotter, tides, grib files, GPS interface and others datas navigation.
- PolarCOM: Virtual instrumentation, from NMEA datas.
- Xtide: numeric and graphical display tides, worldwide coverage.
- zyGrib: download and display meteo files grib downloaded from internet.
- Advanced users can find on http://marinux.pk973.org how to mix and split NMEA datas to and from any source.

This release is made with care of simplicity, weight, efficiency, and can run from several devices (HDD, USB, Flash) on a wide variety of i386 compliant computers, and specially for low power processors. The system image has a size of ~ 330Mo and the occupation memory after the first boot is about 100Mo.

It is based on (X)Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" including the lrd scripts from Gauvain Pocentek for Linutop OS 4.0 and borrow:

- the same robust architecture (squashfs filesystem, no write access).
- the persistent mode, allowing to keep datas in live mode.
- the restore mode, allowing to restore exactly the original system.

In this release, Linutop software and hardware are quoted, but I am not employee by this company. However, I believe in the future of lite, simple and power-efficient computing, and for me, Linutop has the best hard and soft approach. See at www.linutop.com.

Re: Linux Marine Distro

Sounds great! Any thoughts on putting a metapackage together on a ppa so this stuff can be installed on any deb distro? Just curious.

Bonjour Red Sky,

Thanks for your apreciation.
Xinutop is a complete standalone marine specialised OS based on Xfce-Ubuntu. So it cannot be installed as any deb application, but on a bootable media as disk, Compact flask, USB key, etc...
Take a look at the readme on Index of /, it's a simple and basic install, and more, with understandable steps .

Re: Linux Marine Distro

Is this a "live" distro, in other words, can I burn this to a CD and then boot my Windoze computer with it? If not, any plans to make it a live distro?

I read it (twice) and saw no mention of it being a "live" distro so I asked just in case this was on your radar for the future. By your reply I will then assume you have no plans nor interest in this. Thanks.

Re: Linux Marine Distro

Sounds like a great idea - would be very nice to have a live distro to test. Do you have any plans to add PskMail to the distro?

Bonsoir prof_mariner,

What is exactly a live distro for you ? do you think it is only for cd rom (the less reliable and slowest media after disquette) ?
A live distro must contain any OS able to boot any computer, reconize the hardware "on the fly" and install the adapted drivers.
As such, Xinutop is a "live" distro, but use USB sticks, external disks, SD cards, any static memory system is preferable than a CD.
But you can also install it on the hard disk as the main OS.
Try it !

Re: Linux Marine Distro

Bonsoir symagellan,

Idem, Xinutop is a live distro. Take a look at the readme file, install Xinutop on a USB key, and boot your computer !

Xinutop run in live with a persistent mode, so you can install PSKmail in cmdline with apt-get, with a valid /etc/sources.list as any Ubuntu/Debian app.

This version contain Hamfax because it's very simple to use (for weatherfax), but it's little old, and need oss, soon canceled in the future kernels.
The next release will include PSKmail and FLdigi, with weatherfax since V3.21.

Re: Linux Marine Distro

PSKMail (the client) now runs on Windows also.

The PSKMail server runs on Linux.

Another navigation distro you might be interested in looking at is Navigatrix.

Re: Linux Marine Distro

While on the subject of Marine Linux:

Why not run a PSKMail server (easy as child's play for you Linux guys), from the marina office, yacht club or even your boat at the dock ?

Other boats can then send email to their regular email accounts via the server.
Get any posted files directly from the server.
Do APRS position info (manually or automatically from the GPS) gating onto a on-line Google map.
Get GRIB files and weather catalog info from Saildocs.com for FREE, etc.

Of course you need a General ham radio license. (Easy to get nowadays without the Morse Code requirement anymore.)

Download the server and do this here:

Re: Linux Marine Distro

Bonjour,

About PSKmail client:
jPSKmail is a java application, so it work not only on Windows but on Java plateform compatible as Linux.
But the price in megabit is hight. About 100Mo for java. So I will try the last PSKmail client (0.2.9-4) alvaible and written in perl.
About Navigatrix:
Not the same goal.
Navigatrix a very complete (and sometimes redondant, 1.3Go) solution, with Windows progs included via wine. Xinutop with less of 400Mo is a simpler, lighter solution, can run on small machines as AMD Geode 500MHZ with 256Mo of RAM, and contains the essential packages of navigation in pure Linux. However, the user can add others packages as any Ubuntu distro.

Re: Linux Marine Distro

Most people who use Navigatrix or running linux in general on their boats are using WINE to run AIRMAIL for either sailmail or winlink.

I am glad to see you pskmail tool written in multi-platform Java and using the sound card. Hopefully you can grow your server list and gradually improve the encoding to perform like Pactor. I'd love to see more people using PSKmail.
